Sant Lluis combines a clearly laid-out townscape with coastal coves, trails and traces of Menorca’s history. The Molí de Dalt at the entrance to the town now houses the ethnological museum and a tourist information office.

Local history and architecture

Sant Lluis was founded during the French presence on Menorca in the 18th century. The town was founded in honour of the French King Louis IX. The layout is also a distinctive feature: Sant Lluis developed in an orderly, grid-like pattern, in a style reminiscent of 19th-century urban planning. The town thus brings together its historical origins and a clearly recognisable urban layout.

Coast: beaches, coves and water activities

At Playa Punta Prima, the beach is 200 metres long and about 75 metres wide. From there, you can enjoy views of S’Illot des Cagaire and Illa de l’Aire. Possible activities include stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and coastal excursions. The coast can therefore be explored not only for its views, but also through a range of water activities.

Cala Binibeca Vell is a rocky cove next to the seaside settlement of Binibeca Vell, designed by architect Antoni Sintes. With its deep waters and seabed of rock, sand and Posidonia seagrass, the cove is suitable for snorkelling. Binibeca Nou offers a different scale: its beach is 400 metres long and lies between Punta Binibeca and Cala Torret. There, too, the seabed of sand and Posidonia beds is suitable for snorkelling.

Cala Alcaufar lies at the end of a deep, narrow cove flanked by rocky cliffs, and offers views of Illot des Torn. The settlement of the same name is also home to Torre d’Alcaufar, an 18th-century defensive tower. Another historic coastal structure is Torre de Son Ganxo, also known as Torre de Punta Prima. The Spanish coastal defence tower was built in 1786.

Routes and landscape

The circular Ruta Vermella, Route 1 on the rural trails of Sant Lluis, is 8 kilometres long and has a moderate-to-low difficulty level. The circular Ruta Lila, Route 3, is also circular: it is 11.2 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route details for distance, difficulty and duration come from a draft of the municipal emergency plan, making it possible to compare the routes by length and stated difficulty. The Camí de Cavalls stage from Binisafuller to Punta Prima passes through the Sant Lluis area. It is 8.06 kilometres long, flat and easy—a distance close to that of the Ruta Vermella and shorter than the Ruta Lila. Check the current route locally before setting out.

The Camí de Biniati is designated as a nature trail in Sant Lluis; Menorca’s cycling route also runs along it. The Camí de Cavalls section in the Sant Lluis area includes seasonal ponds, which are of high ecological value due to their rich biodiversity. The Camí del far de l’Illa de l’Aire provides access to the lighthouse and passes through a protected landscape of great importance. For these routes, it is advisable to check the current route and local access conditions before setting out.

Seasonal events and wine

The Mercat d’Estiu de Sant Lluis is a seasonal market: on Thursdays, it features more than 40 stalls selling local crafts. Check the latest market information before visiting. At Binifadet, visitors can stroll among the vines and learn about the wine-making process. Visitor arrangements may change, so check them in advance if you are planning a visit.
