The Balearic Islands’ cultural heritage can be seen in a wide variety of structures: agricultural terraces and historic water systems, a fortified upper town and dry-stone buildings. There are also protected areas that span land, sea and islands. Those who like to take a closer look will discover not just individual sights, but also examples of how architectural forms and landscapes are connected.

Cultural Heritage in Stone and Water

The cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana combines agricultural terraces with historic water-management structures. On Ibiza, Dalt Vila is part of the Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture World Heritage site: a fortified upper town and an outstanding example of Renaissance military architecture. The same World Heritage site also includes archaeological and historic sites, as well as an adjoining marine reserve of global significance. Historic buildings and protected marine nature sit side by side here within a shared area.

On Menorca, Talayotic Menorca preserves navetas, roundhouses, taulas, talayots and other dry-stone structures. They represent a tradition of cyclopean architecture spanning around 1,500 years. Together with Dalt Vila, these structures show how varied architectural heritage can be: from Renaissance military architecture to a long tradition of dry-stone construction.

There are striking dimensions to discover underground, too: the Coves del Drach in Porto Cristo, Mallorca, extend horizontally for almost 2,400 metres and reach a maximum depth of 25 metres below the surface. Sobrassada de Mallorca, a paprika-seasoned pork sausage recognised as a protected geographical indication, is part of the region’s culinary culture.

Comparing Island Landscapes

The Ses Salines Nature Park extends across southern Ibiza, northern Formentera and the sea between the two islands. Its land area covers more than 2,752 hectares, while its marine area covers 14,028 hectares. Birdlife is also part of its character: around 210 bird species stop to rest and breed there during their migrations. Near Ses Illetes and the island of s'Espalmador on Formentera, a particularly well-preserved dune system is a prominent feature of the landscape; the dunes protect saltwater lagoons.

More than 250 bird species have been observed in S'Albufera de Mallorca. This figure and the approximate number of species in Ses Salines Nature Park may change as surveys are updated. Another natural area with a similarly sounding name is S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park. It covers more than 5,000 hectares and includes a two-kilometre-long lagoon, coastal areas, an island and traditionally farmed fincas. Dunes, ponds and green paths are also part of its landscape. The nature park is less than half an hour away by bicycle from MaĂł; check route conditions and access before setting off.

Routes and Island Connections

Both Ses Salines Nature Park and MondragĂł Nature Park have four routes that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. In Ses Salines, diving trips are also possible over Posidonia oceanica meadows. Access and activities there may vary depending on the season or the rules of the protected area. Route conditions and visitor facilities at MondragĂł Nature Park may also change; check the latest information before your trip.

Sa Dragonera can only be reached by boat. The landing point at Cala Lledó is the only access from the coastal area to the information centre, hiking trails and other facilities on the island. The nature park has four signposted hiking trails. Cabrera offers visitors a small harbour, a castle, a museum and a shelter; boat connections are available from Colònia de Sant Jordi. Check visitor facilities and connections before your trip.

The Balearic Islands’ main passenger ports include Palma de Mallorca and Alcúdia on Mallorca, Maó on Menorca, Ciutadella de Menorca, Ibiza and La Savina on Formentera. Regular ferries connect the islands daily. If you are planning a ferry crossing, check the latest timetable before your trip.
