Sa Mesquida brings together a bay divided in two, a wide sandy beach and a history of coastal defence. There are also details about snorkelling, seasonal stand-up paddleboarding and routes through Maó.

Bay, Beach and Views

Sa Mesquida is a small bay divided into two by Punta de sa Torre. Arenal de sa Mesquida is a wide beach with fine, white sand. From the shore, you can see the Illots d’en Mesquida. Pa Gros, a hill about 70 metres high, also rises above the beach. From there, you can enjoy views of the coast. The shore and the hill therefore offer different viewpoints: the islets can be seen from the shore, while the view from Pa Gros takes in the coast.

Beach Activities and Seasonal Conditions

The clear waters of Sa Mesquida are suitable for snorkelling. The seabed is sandy and rocky, with Posidonia seagrass. A section of the beach is seasonally designated for stand-up paddleboarding and marked off with buoys. A lifeguard is on duty there in summer. When planning beach activities, you can distinguish between snorkelling in the water and the designated, marked-off area for stand-up paddleboarding; the lifeguard service is explicitly limited to the summer.

Coastal History at Torre de sa Mesquida

Torre de sa Mesquida is an English coastal defence tower built in 1799. Along with ten other coastal towers, it formed part of the island’s defence system. Its architectural features include a wide, reinforced machicolation on the west side and numerous loopholes for rifle fire. The entire complex is currently privately owned. Another historical event concerns the beach: French troops landed here to occupy Menorca.

Getting There, Routes and Amenities

From Maó, follow the signposted road to the Sa Mesquida residential development. Parking is available close to the beach. One route starts at the end of Maó harbour and heads towards Sa Mesquida. The route from Maó via Sa Mesquida to Es Grau continues to Parc Natural de la Albufera des Grau. Sa Mesquida also has bars, restaurants and supermarkets.

When planning where to stay, it is important to note the local accommodation options: there are no tourist accommodation facilities in the Sa Mesquida and Es Grau areas. Plan your visit to the bay separately from your choice of accommodation. The bars, restaurants and supermarkets mentioned are among the amenities available in Sa Mesquida, but this does not change the distinction between local amenities and tourist accommodation.

Coastal Festival in August

The Sa Mesquida coastal festival takes place on the first weekend of August; the exact dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year in question. This distinguishes the recurring event from the specific dates in any given year.
