Formigal lies at the foot of the Aramón Formigal ski resort. From the summit of Tres Hombres, you can see major peaks in the central Pyrenees. The NieveAventura winter snow experience takes place in the Valle de Portalet; summer hiking routes in Formigal-Panticosa offer another way to explore the ski resort. Pre-Romanesque architecture and sacred works of art add a cultural and historical dimension to the focus on nature and outdoor activities.
Winter: snowshoes or a lift ride
The family-oriented NieveAventura snow experience takes place in the Valle de Portalet in winter. It includes a snowshoe route through the mountain area, marked with Snowys and featuring several obstacles. Seasonal operations may vary; check the relevant times if you want to include the experience as a fixed part of your travel plans.
The “Paseo en telesilla” experience takes you from Formigal to the resort area by chairlift or gondola. No skiing experience is required. The ride reaches an altitude of nearly 2,000 metres and offers views across the entire Valle de Tena. The lift operates seasonally; check operating times before making this experience a firm part of your plans.
The two activities offer different highlights: NieveAventura centres on a marked snowshoe route with obstacles, while “Paseo en telesilla” focuses on the lift ride and its views.
Hiking routes and the GR 11
In summer, Formigal-Panticosa offers hiking routes that provide a different way to explore the ski resort. One specifically named route is the GR 11 Formigal–Ibones de Anayet. Its starting point is beside the Corral de las Mulas on the A-136 towards Portalet, 3 km from Formigal. The path climbs gently at first and runs parallel to the Barranco de Culivillas; at the Formigal ski station, it joins the GR 11.
There are therefore different starting points to consider when choosing a route: the summer hiking routes explore the ski resort, while the GR 11 is described with a specific starting point and named landmarks along its first section. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.
Churches, art and food
The pre-Romanesque church of Formigal was built in the 11th century and belongs to the group of Serrablo churches. The Iglesia del Salvador de Basarán in Formigal houses a 12th-century baptismal font from the parish church of Ruesta. It also preserves remains of a 14th-century mural from the Ermita de la Virgen de Basarán. In Formigal, older church architecture can thus be seen alongside sacred objects with different origins and historical contexts.
Las Mugas offers a culinary perspective: this gastronomic experience combines local produce with a concept that relates its flavours to the natural surroundings. Menus and partners may change. Cultural and gastronomic themes thus complement the seasonal options, from winter experiences to hiking routes.
