Escarrilla lies at the confluence of the Escarra and Gállego rivers and is surrounded by beech, pine and fir forests. The confluence describes the town’s location, while the beech, pine and fir forests characterize its surroundings. Alongside these landscape features, a specific mountain summit, local buildings and a multi-day festival offer other points of interest. This gives you several different ways to plan your trip.

Landscape and Mountain Destinations

Punta Cochata lies west of the town and is the most rugged summit in the area around Escarrilla. From the summit, you can enjoy a view of the Valle de Tena. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the landscape around the town and a specific viewpoint: rivers and forests describe Escarrilla’s wider setting, while Punta Cochata offers a view of the valley from the summit.

Activities with Different Details

The Garganta del río Escarra is a limestone canyoning descent, 1 km long, with a 250 m elevation difference, difficulty level 4 and good facilities; the season runs from July to September. These details answer different planning questions: length and elevation difference describe the dimensions of the descent, while the difficulty level indicates its rating and the dates specify its season. Unlike Punta Cochata, which is characterized by its summit location and views, the descent is more focused on technical requirements and timing. If canyoning is your priority, plan your trip for July to September.

The starting point for the El Escuacho Via Ferrata is at the entrance to Escarrilla, where there is a small car park. Check the current parking situation before you travel.

Architectural History in the Town

The parish church of Escarrilla was built in the 19th century, later extended, and retains a Baroque altarpiece. An altarpiece is the decorated structure behind or above an altar; its Baroque style adds a feature of the church’s furnishings to its architectural history. The architecture route also includes a 19th-century structure: a bridge. The year 1823 appears on the façade of Casa Sorrosal, and 1841 on Casa Maribuena. The dates on the houses provide a more precise chronology than the century references for the church and bridge. The church’s construction phases can also be distinguished from its furnishings: the later extension is part of the building’s development, while the Baroque altarpiece is part of its furnishings.

Festivals and a Local Designation

Around August 20, Escarrilla celebrates the Fiestas de San Joaquín over several days. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, use the period around August 20 as a rough guide and check the programme for your chosen year. Another local designation applies to O Cajico de Escarrilla: an official 2025 order designates it as a singular tree of Aragon.
