Huétor Tájar combines a Nasrid defensive tower with a long agricultural and craft history. At the same time, described walking routes range from circular trails through the Vega del Genil to paths branching off near the historic settlement of El Cárcamo. This gives you different options when planning your visit: cultural sites and traditions, or routes between Huétor Tájar and Villanueva Mesía.
Torre Alquería and its history
Torre Alquería is a 14th-century Nasrid tower and part of a defensive complex of Islamic origin. It is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The tower has four floors and a terrace. The Torre Alquería complex also includes an administrative building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as a large courtyard intended to be used as an event venue.
If you would like to visit the complex, you can arrange a visit through its social media channels. You can also check the schedule of activities there. This allows you to plan your visit around the activities announced there, rather than assuming the courtyard is already being used as an event venue.
Water, agriculture and crafts
The “Legado del Agua y la Tierra” Interpretation Centre showcases representative waterworks from the region. It draws on Roman and Arab traditions as well as later developments in the contemporary era. A visit also introduces you to Huétor Tájar’s agricultural and historical-cultural heritage, showing how the crops grown here have changed over time. Water engineering and agriculture thus offer two different ways to explore the region’s history.
Traditional brickmaking is another local topic. El Tejar is a pre-industrial production complex for roof tiles, bricks and adobe bricks. The Bertos family brickyard near the Genil operated continuously from the beginning of the 19th century until 7 January 1963. Two updraft kilns, also known as Arab kilns, were found on the brickyard site.
The Ruta de la Tapa del Espárrago offers a culinary connection. More than twenty local businesses took part in its sixth edition. Local chefs created innovative dishes featuring green asparagus. This links interest in regional crops with a specific local food tradition.
Festivals throughout the year
On the evening of 2 February, groups of friends and families traditionally gather around bonfires for Día de la Candelaria to eat and drink. Ring-shaped bread and chocolate are also part of the tradition, eaten as a snack or for breakfast. Carnival has a different character. Local residents and visitors come in costume for the festivities; on Saturday, there is a parade and municipal costume competitions.
During Semana Santa, figures of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and other saints are carried through the town’s streets. On 25 April, families and friends traditionally spend the day in the countryside for the San Marcos festival, gathering there to share a meal. For Día de la Cruz, crosses are displayed in shop windows, homes, squares and streets; many have a stall selling food and drinks. The Feria in honour of San Isidro usually lasts four days and includes leisure, cultural and sporting events for all age groups. If you are travelling for a particular festival, check the dates for that year in advance.
Choose a walking route by its course
The routes described can be distinguished by their destinations and landscapes. One circular route runs from Huétor Tájar through Villanueva Mesía and back, passing through the Vega del Genil. Another circular walk, undertaken with the Asociación de Mujeres con Cáncer – ATENEA, goes from Huétor Tájar to Villanueva Mesía and runs along sections of the Genil and Cacín rivers in particular. The two circular routes therefore highlight different stretches of river and landscape.
Another route option starts at Paseo Norte and leads to the historic settlement of El Cárcamo. The route branches into three trails there. This gives you another specific landmark to help you find your way if you want to explore the edge of town and the surrounding trails. These destinations and routes can help you choose the focus that suits your stay, without combining the different routes into a single tour.
