Laroles is a good base for hiking through the landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. Holm oak and pine forests are part of the area, along with landscapes suited to hiking. From Laroles, you can look through the gorge of the Río Adra all the way to the Mediterranean. When planning an outing, you can choose between forests, gorges and distant views as different landscape features.

Hiking trails with different destinations

The GR-7 section from Laroles to Puerto de la Ragua connects the two places and passes through high-mountain landscapes. The section that also starts in Laroles and heads towards Válor follows former connecting routes in the Alpujarra. The Ruta del Castaño Milenario offers something different: it starts at the viewpoint by the Ermita de San Sebastián, crosses the Río Laroles and leads to a centuries-old chestnut tree whose large branches droop down to the ground. The destinations, landscapes and history of the routes set these three options apart.

The Fuente de Mauricio is also accessible from Laroles via a short walk. For a different kind of activity, Parque Río Laroles lies beside the Río Laroles in a deep, densely vegetated gorge. It has outdoor exercise equipment and is also suitable for walking, hiking and relaxing. The route to the chestnut tree and the park both combine activity with scenery, but each has its own destination.

You can travel from Granada by bus to the stop in Laroles for the route to the Castaño Milenario. Check departure times before planning your trip, as timetables may change.

Culture and local history

The Casa Museo Doña Pilar displays its collection across more than 15 rooms, with hundreds of salvaged and restored objects. Documentary audiovisual exhibits tell the story of the Alpujarra and its rural traditions. A visit to the museum therefore leads from the objects to the ways of life that place them in a broader context.

Historic sites also tell stories of everyday life and local traditions. The Lavadero del Mercadillo is an old washhouse with stone basins that served as a meeting place for women in traditional daily life. The Ermita de San Antón y San Sebastián dates from the 18th century. The Fuente Plaza de Laroles, also known as Fuente de la Virgen, is located in Plaza de la Fuente.

Laroles also has two distinct cultural venues. Un Teatro Entre Todos is an open-air theatre on the mountainside outside the village. It was built using traditional materials typical of the region’s agricultural terraces and serves as a versatile cultural space. The Festival Me Vuelves Lorca takes place every summer in a stone amphitheatre in Laroles, converted from a former threshing floor. For each edition, it is advisable to check the dates before travelling.

Festivals and local traditions

The Fiesta de San Sebastián is celebrated on 20 January in honour of Laroles’s patron saint. The programme includes a procession as well as religious, cultural and sporting activities; the exact programme may vary from year to year. Moros y Cristianos takes place on the weekend closest to 20 January: in El Ejido, it stages a historic conflict between two opposing sides. During the Procesión de los Manchos, the patron saints San Sebastián and San Antonio Abad are carried from the hermitage to the church. The faithful form two long lines and light the way with esparto-grass torches.

Laroles is known for its chestnut trees; their fruit is prized and in demand. A past cultural event celebrated another rural tradition: the fifth La Matanza de Laroles, held on 6 December 2025, portrayed the traditional home slaughter with accompanying activities, an exhibition, a re-enactment and music. This date refers to that specific edition, not to a future event calendar.

The nearby La Ragua pass is part of the area’s historic landscape. It was used for significant traffic in people and goods between the Guadix area and the Marquesado, and the Alpujarra. Laroles thus brings together hiking destinations, cultural sites and traces of historic routes, without every outing needing to have the same focus.
