Churriana de la Vega can be viewed through several layers of cultural history. Three surviving elements of Muslim origin point to the former Alquería Yurliyana; churches and a hermitage add further historical markers, while the “Kilómetro del Arte” opens up a more recent history of art. You can choose different focuses for your trip: historic buildings and everyday places, contemporary art or a cycling route.

Historic buildings and everyday life

The Baños Árabes de Churriana de la Vega are protected as a monument in the Bien de Interés Cultural category. Together with the Acequia Arabuleila and the bridge that crosses it, they are the only surviving elements of Muslim origin from the former Alquería Yurliyana. The historic setting therefore encompasses a bathhouse, a water channel and a crossing. The built heritage and water system are brought to life here through three distinct elements.

The Iglesia de la Visitación de la Virgen was built around the year 1500 and is one of Churriana’s emblematic historic sights. According to researchers, it stands on the site of a former mosque. The construction date and this historical interpretation offer two different points of reference for the church. Check local access before visiting.

The antiguo lavadero offers a different perspective: in the past, it was widely used by the women of the town. This shifts the focus beyond religious buildings to the everyday work associated with a washing place. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza dates from the 17th century. Together with the church built around 1500, it allows you to compare the dates of two religious buildings.

Art in the open air

The “Kilómetro del Arte” is an open-air museum that began in 1999 with a sculpture honoring the bullfighter Frascuelo. More works were added, dedicated to important themes for Churriana de la Vega. The open-air museum has established itself as a space of significant contemporary artistic interest. Its development differs from the history of the churches: here, you encounter a collection of several works whose dedications address local themes. This provides an avenue to contemporary art and its points of connection with Churriana, alongside the history of its buildings.

The cycling route as a focus in its own right

The Ruta Radial de Churriana de la Vega is 14,187.02 meters long, or around 14.2 kilometers. It is one of seven cycling routes that involve the municipalities of the Metropolitano Suroeste de Granada strategy. The route’s length gives you a concrete basis for planning; if you’d like to include it, check the signage and operating conditions locally. This lets you consider cycling as a focus in its own right alongside the cultural themes, without conflating the different nature of the buildings, artworks and route.
