In Lobras, houses cluster around the church and square: the Moorish town layout has been preserved to this day. The area also offers historic routes, heritage sites and museums with a range of different focuses. When planning your stay, you might first consider whether you are most interested in architectural history, museum collections or routes through the landscape.
Townscape, church and museums
Narrow streets, white houses, flowers and flowerpots shape the townscape. The Iglesia Parroquial de San AgustĂn stands at the entrance to the town. Its tower is the oldest part of the present-day church and adjoins the small main chapel. The church is listed as part of the Patrimonio Inmueble de AndalucĂa. Admission is free; check before your visit whether this arrangement is still in effect.
The Centro de interpretaciĂłn de la MĂşsica Lombarda uses musical instruments as a starting point for a journey through the sounds of the world. Instruments from the “El viaje de LĂşa” collection are on display. The Museo del Malacate in TĂmar has a different focus: it presents the region’s mercury mining, from the extraction of cinnabar to the operation of the factories. It also covers ethnological traditions and artifacts such as weaving, silkworm farming, traditional songs and agricultural implements. A prior appointment is required to visit the Museo del Malacate.
The two museums offer distinct perspectives: one focuses on musical instruments and sounds from around the world, while the other explores mining and the region’s inherited traditions. This lets you choose the cultural side of your stay according to the topics that interest you most.
Protected heritage and landscape
The Acequia de TĂmar-Lobras is protected as a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural. Its importance is associated with historical, ethnological and natural values. The Minas RodrĂguez-Acosta in Lobras are also listed in a BIC declaration as a site of mining and industrial heritage. The mines are inactive.
At Peñón HundĂo, terraced farmland sits alongside very old traces of pottery or settlement that may date back to the Middle Ages. This possible dating is tentative: the traces may go back to this period, but they are not necessarily from it. Piedra Amarilla is associated with ibex, birds of prey and climbers. The area therefore offers a range of landscape interests, from archaeological traces and terraces to nature and climbing.
Comparing routes and trails
The Camino Viejo between Juviles and TĂmar is about 3.5 kilometres long and paved for much of its length. Trail conditions may vary. Another route, the Acequia de los Castaños, is linear and rated easy; it is about 2.4 kilometres long and takes approximately 40 minutes. In terms of distance, it is therefore shorter than the Camino Viejo. Check route details locally, as trail specifications may change.
The GR-7 E4 reaches Lobras from Cádiar and then continues through almond and olive terraces to TĂmar. TĂmar can be reached from Lobras in about 40 minutes. The GR-142 Senda de La Alpujarra offers a different choice of direction: east leads to Cádiar, while west leads to Nieles. These routes therefore have different points of reference: the GR-7 connects Lobras and TĂmar, while the GR-142 lets you choose which way to go.
Festivals and local food
The San Marcos festival on 25 April includes a shared meal in the countryside. It features homemade salchichĂłn, hornazo, olives seasoned with dried tomatoes and wine from the local harvest. If you plan to visit for the festival, check the date in advance.
The Fiestas de San AgustĂn in Lobras are held on 28 and 29 August. The programme includes the Entierro de la Zorra or the Baile de la Era, with traditional games and competitions accompanied by a band. Check the dates and programme before travelling. While San Marcos centres mainly on a shared meal and the dishes listed above, the Fiestas de San AgustĂn offer a different glimpse of local traditions through games, competitions and music.
