Alhendín brings together architectural history, recurring traditions and a circular route with a clearly defined time commitment to help you plan your trip. First choose your focus: churches and historical traces, a visit around San Marcos or Easter, or several hours on the “De la Vega al Secano” circular route. This distinction is useful when planning your day: the hike takes several hours, while the traditions fall on specific calendar dates.
Churches and historical traces
The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción has a single-nave layout and side chapels connected by round arches. This spatial arrangement and the furnishings of the main altar niche offer different points of interest when viewing the church: the niche contains a depiction of the Immaculate Conception by Pedro de Mena.
The Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción is also part of the town’s architectural history. It was built over a mosque and features Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The remains of Alhendín’s former fortress add a different chapter to these historical themes: they were an important setting in the suppression of the first Morisco uprising in 1500. The fortress should be understood as a former structure and in terms of its significance in this historical context.
Another example of rural technology is the Aljibe del Cortijo de Miñarro. This Arab hydraulic structure naturally collects rainwater so that it can be used to irrigate the land. Alhendín’s architectural and cultural history therefore encompasses not only churches and fortress remains, but also water management and agriculture.
Traditions with fixed calendar dates
San Marcos is a local tradition held on April 25. On this day, families and friends head to the countryside to observe the “cascar el huevo” tradition; the bread associated with it is called “el macarrón” in Alhendín. If this date is central to your trip, check the programme for the relevant year before planning your stay around it.
The Reverencias are also part of the Easter season. For more than a hundred years, the Resurrection has been reenacted on Easter Sunday in front of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Aurora. The hermitage was built at the beginning of the 19th century and is home to the revered image of the Virgen de la Aurora. The tradition and its location are therefore clear for trip planning, but the date of the annual programme should be confirmed.
Circular route and time planning
“De la Vega al Secano” is a 10.5-kilometre circular route that starts at Parque Ferial. The route is of low difficulty and takes an estimated four to five hours. Allow for this time as a dedicated part of your itinerary rather than treating the hike as a short stop. Its length and estimated duration provide a concrete basis for planning your day, but do not replace checking current trail conditions.
Casa Colorá, a cortijo dating from 1800, lies along the route and adds a further connection to rural architectural history. If you decide to hike, confirm current trail conditions locally.
Landscape and getting there
The eastern and southern slopes of Montevive are characterized by biodiversity and a local ecosystem. They offer views of the Sierra Nevada and El Temple. This is a distinct aspect to consider alongside churches, traditions and the circular route when planning your trip: if nature and views are your priority, Montevive is one of the Alhendín highlights mentioned here.
For bus travel, the transport page of the Alhendín municipal website provides timetable references for routes 160 and 360. Check current departure times before your trip. Anyone planning their stay around San Marcos or the Reverencias should also check the programme for the relevant year; those planning the circular route can confirm trail conditions locally. The practical checks therefore depend on the reason for your visit and are limited to what is needed for each type of planning.
