In the heart of the Granada Geopark, Zújar brings together striking landscapes and a layered local history. The municipality encompasses both rocky, arid terrain and dense pine forests, as well as farmland, historic districts and traditions dating back to the 16th century. There are several ways to explore the area as you plan your trip: through Cerro Jabalcón, its architectural history or its cultural life.

Landscapes and Views from Cerro Jabalcón

Cerro Jabalcón is a massif composed mainly of Jurassic limestone and reaches an elevation of 1,492 metres. From here, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views across more than 4,000 square kilometres of the Guadix-Baza Basin. The mountain is a striking geological landmark in the landscape, while the Vega de Zújar reveals another side of the municipality.

The Vega is dotted with terraced fields, dry-stone walls and centuries-old olive trees. Water basins, Arabic irrigation channels and waterways carry water across the cultivated fields. The landscape thus brings natural features and traces of agricultural use together.

Hiking, Cycling and Water Activities

The “Ascent to Jabalcón” mountain route passes through Zújar. You can hike on Cerro Jabalcón among pine trees and evergreen shrubs; mountain biking is also possible there. The activities described on the mountain cater to a range of interests: a mountain route, walks through Cerro’s vegetation or a mountain-bike ride.

Boating is possible on the Embalse del Negratín. This complements the mountain activities with an option on the water, without implying a shared route or a set itinerary. The Estación de Vuelo Libre Jabalcón also offers opportunities for free flight and astrotourism.

Historic Centre and Architectural History

The historic centre includes a district with a Moorish character and whitewashed houses, some of which date from the 17th century. In the Abatel district, a densely packed group of traditional cave houses forms another part of the architectural heritage. Together, these two townscapes offer a glimpse into different forms of housing and building in Zújar.

The Iglesia de la Anunciación also reflects several building phases: it was built in the 16th century on the ruins of an earlier mosque. The present church dates from the mid-18th century and combines neoclassical elements with some baroque features. Visitors interested in the development of local architecture will find a clear sequence here, from the former site to the building’s present design.

“Papeles,” Pilgrimage and Local Cuisine

The performance of the “papeles” is a tradition more than 300 years old and an important expression of Zújar’s cultural heritage. The papelistas are amateur actors selected each year who perform verse passages from the “Drama del Cautiverio y Rescate de la Virgen de la Cabeza.” Thus, alongside its architecture, the town’s cultural identity includes a living performance tradition.

The pilgrimage in Zújar has been celebrated without interruption on the last Sunday in April since the 16th century. Check the specific dates before your trip. The Romería begins at Plaza Mayor and follows the Camino de la Virgen to the summit of Cerro Jabalcón. Its route thus links the town centre with the distinctive mountain without prescribing a set itinerary.

Traditional Zújar cuisine includes Gurrupina, Gachas, Tortas, Migas, Gurullos and products from home butchering. Their names offer a point of entry into the local food culture. To reach Cerro Jabalcón by car, take the Autovía A-92: at exit 335, take the A-315 towards Zújar, Cuevas del Campo and Pozo Alcón, then follow the signs to Cerro Jabalcón. As signs and road conditions can change, check the route before setting out.
