Stranice combines several archaeological and architectural traces with opportunities for walking and cycling. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Stranice, you can choose your focus: historic sites, paths by ponds, and trails through the surrounding hills appeal to different interests. You can tailor your trip to whether you are particularly interested in cultural history or outdoor activities.
Memorial Site and Architectural History
In Graben near Stranice is the Museum 100 frankolovskih žrtev. Directly opposite are two graves of 100 Slovenian victims who were hanged by the Nazis in revenge toward the end of the Second World War. The exhibition “Skrivnosti zaklada s Stranic” presents finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Specialist reconstructions of tools, weapons, and jewellery were created for this part of the exhibition. A memorial site and early material culture thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of history.
The complex around St. Lawrence’s Church includes an ancient cemetery; the Roman necropolis in the village area around the cemetery and church is designated an archaeological monument. The church itself is listed as a cultural monument in the Municipality of Zreče. Several ancient spolia are built into the church, the rectory, and the cemetery wall. Spolia are building elements reused from an earlier context. The eastern part of the nave, the chancel, and the bell tower have survived from the original late Gothic church. Archaeological evidence and different elements of architectural history can therefore be explored together as part of one place.
Beyond the older artefacts, there are also archaeological and geological traces: In autumn 2022, metal detectorists discovered a larger number of bronze objects on a hillside near Stranice, close to Zreče. Remarkable fossils and minerals have been found in the Stranice quarry. These discoveries add finds from the landscape and the ground beneath it to the history of the place.
Ponds, Walks, and Cycling Routes
At Cankarjevi ribniki, you can fish and walk along the fish farm to enjoy the unspoilt nature. If you plan to fish, check the conditions before setting out. The food and drink establishment at Cankarjevi ribniki is permanently closed; check before your trip whether this has changed.
Between the ponds and Čretvež, a preserved section of a Roman road offers a place to walk. Numerous forest paths also lead from Stranice to the surrounding hills and mountains. The hills offer views of Pohorje. Walks thus offer different points of interest: the road section links your walk with a historic relic, while the forest paths lead to the surrounding high ground.
The local roads around Stranice are also suitable for cyclists. A cycling route from Zreče to Žička Kartuzija passes through Stranice. When deciding what to focus on during your trip, you can choose between walks by the ponds, paths to the surrounding hills, and a cycling route connected with Stranice.
