There are several ways to explore Paka during your stay: a marked hiking trail to the source of the Paka, historic chapels, and a memorial monument. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Hiking Trail to the Source of the Paka
A description from 2021 names the marked hiking trail to the source of the Paka as “Tematska pot od Hude luknje do izvira reke Pake”. The source lies in the Pohorje forests at an elevation of 1,412 metres, below the Volovica plateau. This gives the trail a clear destination, while the elevation and plateau place the source in its landscape.
On the way to the source, the water flows over large and small granite boulders, forming small waterfalls. At the source, an information board describes the features of this part of the Pohorje. Check the condition of the board before your visit.
Chapels with Distinctive Features
The Termotova kapelica dates from 1933 and has been restored. It is a closed chapel, with pronounced corner edges and a tympanum shaping its exterior. A tympanum is the gable field of a chapel. Inside are two side niches and a glazed main niche. You can therefore consider the outer outline and the layout of the interior as two aspects of the same architecture.
The chapel stands in a pasture on the path to the Ošlakova homestead, which has its own chapel. The Ošlakova kapelica is beside a road near the house at Paka 84. Inside are a niche with a crucifix and a statue of Mary with the Child; above them is a tiled gable roof. During the 1995 restoration, the statue of Mary was acquired, replacing a cross that had previously been there.
The two chapels can also be compared in terms of their history: the year it was built and its architectural features define the Termotova kapelica, while the 1995 restoration provides a specific date for the change to the Ošlakova kapelica’s furnishings.
Memorial Monument at the Požeg Homestead
A memorial monument stands at the Požeg homestead, made from an unworked granite monolith bearing a star and three cast-iron plaques. It commemorates the attack of 18 February 1944, in which twelve partisans lost their lives. The contrast between granite and iron makes the materials an important feature in their own right, alongside the historical reference.
When choosing a theme for your trip, you can compare the details: the connection with nature is reflected in the trail’s destination and the source’s elevation; the chapels highlight architectural form and furnishings; and the monument commemorates a specific event. This can help you decide whether to focus your trip on landscape, architecture, or history.
