When it was founded in 1165, Žiče Charterhouse was the first Carthusian monastery in Central Europe. Guided tours include a panoramic trail, a panoramic niche and a lapidarium, followed by an individual visit with an audio guide. This combines guided stops with the opportunity to explore at your own pace afterwards.
Church, castle and town history
The parish church of St. George also reveals several facets of art history: the late Gothic church houses a Baroque Rosary Chapel with preserved frescoes by Jožef A. Lerchinger from 1749. The bell tower dates from the late 13th century and is one of the oldest and largest in the Slovenian part of Styria. Its architecture and frescoes offer visitors tangible historical details.
The ruins of the Old Castle of Konjice are among the oldest castles in Slovenia and the country’s most significant castle ruins. You can reach the castle by bicycle via a gravel path or on foot along the Zmajček forest educational trail. Stari trg has retained its original layout as a town square since it was first mentioned in written records. The exhibitions at the Mestna galerija Slovenske Konjice are spread across five rooms; the Riemer City Gallery displays more than seventy paintings by local and foreign artists.
A manor house with a park
Trebnik Manor was first mentioned in historical sources in 1308 and described in 1362 as a manor house below Konjice Castle. The manor house is open to the public. The renovated park includes a fitness trail, a sports park, a pond with an island and a children’s playground. The historical references and the park’s features offer visitors different points of interest, without reducing the house’s history to a single date.
Nature and scenery
Five areas within the municipality of Slovenske Konjice are included in the European Natura 2000 network. Near the village of Ličnica, the Petelinjek wetland covers 37 hectares. It includes the four ponds Štatenberšek, Štepihovec, Polšak and Stari gaj; the area is protected under the Natura 2000 network. Karst features such as gullies, sinkholes and springs can be found on Konjiška gora.
The paths in the forest area offer another perspective on the landscape: hiking trails run beneath and through the forests of Konjiška gora. There are also hunting lodges, parks and forest educational trails. Nature here ranges from a clearly defined wetland with named ponds to karst features and forest paths.
Cycling, wine and summer swimming
The cycling route from Slovenske Konjice to Žiče Charterhouse is 25 kilometres round trip, takes about two hours and is of moderate difficulty. Zlati Grič wine cellar offers wine and sparkling wine tastings, as well as tours of the cellar. The Zlati Grič golf course covers 24 hectares and has nine holes. It lies among the vineyards of Škalce; its landscape includes a stream, ponds, woods and shrubs.
The Zbelovo outdoor swimming pool is a seasonal attraction: during the summer months, it offers a large outdoor pool, a smaller paddling pool for children and a beach volleyball court. Check the current operating conditions before your visit.
