A trip to Križevci can focus on different things: the architectural history of the Evangelical Church, Lake Križevsko, or nature along the Mala Krka and around Križevci–Vrej. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on cultural history, waterways or seasonal plant life.
The Evangelical Church: architectural history and design
The Evangelical Church in Križevci was built in 1785 and extended by four metres in 1885. A century separates the two dates, clearly distinguishing the later extension from the original building. The church has a single nave and a small polygonal apse. Five vaulted bays and a bell tower with an onion dome complete the architectural description.
Each feature offers a different insight into the building: “single nave” describes the layout, while the polygonal apse has a many-sided end. The vaulted bays describe the interior’s divisions, while the onion dome characterises the shape of the bell tower. Together with the dates, these details provide a precise view of the church’s architectural history without conflating its original construction with the later extension.
The lake, the Mala Krka and AQUALUTRA
Lake Križevsko is an approximately two-hectare retention basin on the Mala Krka in Križevci and a popular fishing spot. These details convey different aspects: the area gives an approximate sense of its size, the term “retention basin” describes the body of water, and its popularity as a fishing spot indicates its appeal to visitors interested in fishing.
Otters, beavers, stone crayfish, numerous dragonfly species and several fish species are found along the Mala Krka in Križevci. This brings two different perspectives on the water into focus: the lake as a retention basin and fishing spot, and the river fauna along the Mala Krka. This distinction can help you choose which nature theme you would most like to explore on your trip.
The AQUALUTRA Otter Information Centre in Križevci offers another perspective. Visitors can learn about the aquatic and riverside habitats of Goričko and the plant and animal life found there. The centre focuses on education, information and raising awareness for comprehensive nature conservation, with an emphasis on waterways. Learning about habitats and nature conservation thus complements the focus on individual animal species along the river.
Križevci–Vrej: hiking trail, habitats and flowering season
The Pomurska planinska pot hiking trail runs near Križevci–Vrej. The Natura 2000 habitat types dry grasslands (6210(*)) and acid grasslands (6230*) are found there. Their names and codes identify two distinct habitat types and provide a specific basis for understanding the area’s natural features.
In the first half of May, the protected orchids Green-winged Orchid and Burnt Orchid bloom near Križevci–Vrej. This is a seasonal point of reference for planning your trip. Unlike the construction dates of the Evangelical Church, which place its history in time, the orchids’ flowering describes a period in the annual cycle. Križevci is one of the settlements in Goričko Landscape Park; the church, waterways and habitats offer different ways to get to know the area.
