A Renaissance castle in the city park houses the Pomurje Museum Murska Sobota. There is also a 9.5-hectare castle park, cultural history spanning different periods, and cycling options with varying conditions. This lets you explore Murska Sobota according to the focus of your trip.
Museum, Park and Architectural History
The permanent exhibition at the Pomurje Museum illustrates the River Mura and its mills, mineral waters, and various agricultural methods. It also displays archaeological finds relating to prehistoric communities, Pomurje during the Roman Empire, and Slavic settlement. Its subject matter therefore ranges from the landscape and its use to several historical periods.
The city park is a 9.5-hectare castle park surrounding the former Szapary Castle. It is also home to 19 stone lithopunctures by artist Marko Pogačnik. Two historical dates are of interest when it comes to the area’s architecture: the Church of St. Nicholas is first mentioned in sources in 1297. By contrast, the central Protestant complex, including the church, was built between 1907 and 1910 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on plans by Ernő Gerey. The year 1297 refers to the church’s first mention, not its construction date.
Cycling: Different Routes and Conditions
The international European Amazon Cycling Route is 20 kilometres long and follows the River Mura, passing Murska Sobota and Lendava. A ride from Murska Sobota to Goričko has different requirements: it is moderately difficult, follows paved roads and compacted gravel roads, and is not suitable for families with small children.
Pot užitka starts in Murska Sobota and is suitable for a family or group cycling trip. When choosing between the latter two tours, the difference matters: Pot užitka is suitable for a family or group ride, while the tour to Goričko is explicitly not suitable for families with small children.
Walking and Exercise in Fazanerija
Fazanerija Recreation Park has walking and hiking trails that are also suitable for Nordic walking. There is also a fitness trail with 18 stations. This gives you two different ways to exercise here: trails for a walk and a circuit with individual stations. Check the condition of the facilities before you travel, as the infrastructure may be renewed.
EXPANO and Other Outdoor Activities
EXPANO is located on Soboško jezero, on the outskirts of Murska Sobota. The exhibition presents Pomurje’s tourism, nature, crafts and cultural heritage using innovative technology. There is a motor skills park next to the pavilion. Visiting arrangements for EXPANO may change; check the facilities at the motor skills park before you travel.
PANEXFUN offers outdoor archery tag, disc golf, footgolf and paintball. Confirm current availability before your visit. In summer, Klub jadralcev na deski Štrk offers windsurfing courses for beginners and advanced participants; check the seasonal course schedule again before you travel.
Theatre and Culinary Events
Park Theatre Murska Sobota hosts numerous theatre, music, dance, film and other events for different audiences throughout the year. If you want to plan your stay around a particular programme, check the specific dates.
The “Sočna vilica” street food festival on Slovenska ulica invites visitors to enjoy dishes, wines from local winemakers, beer and sweet specialities. If you are planning your visit around the festival, check the dates and vendors in advance.
