Šalovci can be explored through a range of themes: mill history, cycling, nature and a local festival. When planning your visit, it helps to decide which theme you want to focus on. Specific points of interest include a spring with a built structure in Frim Forest, several mills with their own histories, designated natural areas, and cycling routes with different details about their courses and surfaces.

Mills, a spring and architectural history

Frimov vodnjak is a natural spring with a built structure beside the road between Šalovci and Markovci in Frim Forest. The Frim noble family built the spring around 1850. Its name, date of construction and location give the site a clear historical connection. Solarjev mlin, meanwhile, is the oldest building in Šalovci and is partially preserved. It was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The mill was supplied with water from the Krka, and a water channel ran alongside it. Together, the building’s age, water supply and channel tell the story of the mill site’s former use.

Another mill’s history is associated with the Žido-Lenaršičev Mill. It has the only still-functioning wood-gas engine in Slovenia. Visitors can see the mill in Goričko Landscape Park, in the municipality of Šalovci. The engine can be started for visitors by arrangement with the owner. If seeing the engine is especially important to you, factor this arrangement into your plans.

Vaški zvonik Šalovci also connects local history with a specific present-day designation: the bell tower was built in the 19th century by the Evangelical community of the time. Today, it is classified as an immovable cultural heritage asset of local importance. Alongside the mills, it is another historic building with its own religious history and heritage designation.

Cycling routes and their different features

The Volčin-Budinci-TNC-Volčin route is considered less demanding and suitable for families, too. It runs from the centre of Volčin through Budinci to TNC Peterloug and back to Volčin. Its suitability and route provide the main points of reference: returning to Volčin is explicitly part of the route. EuroVelo 13 has different defining features. On the Martinje-to-Pince section, it passes through Šalovci; the paved route is 66 kilometres long. Depending on your interests, you can therefore choose between a route described as family-friendly that returns to Volčin and the longer, paved EuroVelo route.

Nature and local highlights

In the municipality of Šalovci, the Velika Krka valley and its tributaries are designated as ecosystem, hydrological and zoological natural assets. They are part of the Natura 2000 protected area and Goričko Landscape Park. Another natural attraction is near Križevci: the artificial Križevsko Lake lies beside a stream there. It covers about two hectares and is especially popular with anglers. Alongside the buildings and cycling routes, the list of themes thus includes designated natural assets and a clearly identified attraction for anglers.

A culinary highlight is “Kapüstni den,” held in the village of Šalovci since 2002. The festival’s permanent venue is the Volčin event площад in the centre of Šalovci. At its 21st edition in 2025, competing teams from the municipality of Šalovci and the surrounding area prepared Segedin, with other cabbage dishes also on offer. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the edition you want to attend in advance.
