Beltinci combines architectural history and living traditions, without limiting its cultural appeal to a single theme. On your trip, you can focus on the history of the castle and church, preserved blacksmithing, or regional customs. This is especially interesting if you want to view historic architecture in context and include exhibitions and folklore in your plans.

Castle, Park and Exhibitions

Beltinci Castle dates from the 17th century and stands amid a large English-style park. Its distinctive Baroque appearance has been preserved despite later historicist additions. Baroque influences and later additions thus come together, and the castle can be understood as a building with several historical layers.

The castle houses the permanent exhibition “History of Healthcare in Pomurje.” The exhibition “Noble Families at Beltinci Castle,” which includes a countess’s salon, is also on display. In the park in front of the castle, an exhibition of old bicycles explores the development of the bicycle. The range therefore extends from regional medical history and the history of noble families to the history of bicycle technology. A tourist information office is also located in the castle. If the castle, exhibitions or information services are important to your trip, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

St. Ladislaus Church: Construction Phases and Fountain

St. Ladislaus Church was built in 1742 and combines Baroque and Neo-Baroque architecture. Max von Ferstl redesigned the church in the 1890s. Count Zichy had a Venetian fountain built on its south side between 1890 and 1894. The church also includes the Ave Maria side chapel, added in 1894; the Zichy family crypt lies beneath it. These dates help distinguish the construction, redesign and additions chronologically: the 18th-century church building is considerably older than the fountain and chapel from the late 19th century.

Blacksmithing and Regional Customs

Another aspect of the region’s cultural heritage is the “Slavicova kovačija” forge, dating from the early 20th century. With the exception of the entrance door, its original furnishings, hearth with bellows and associated blacksmithing tools have been preserved. For those interested in culture, this offers a different focus from the castle and church: the emphasis is not on construction phases, but on traditional tools and furnishings.

Beltinci’s folklore tradition also has its own timeline. A folklore group was founded in Beltinci in 1938. It mainly performs dances from the Prekmurje region and continues to observe wedding and harvest customs. Performances and dates vary, so check the latest schedule if you would like to include a performance in your trip.

Markovo senje is a traditional event in Beltinci whose origins are traced to the market rights granted in 1817. After the tradition had almost died out, it was revived in 2019; that year, Markovo senje took place in the center of Beltinci on St. Mark’s Day. If you would like to plan your trip around Markovo senje, check the dates for the relevant year.
