Liptovská Teplá combines Early Gothic church art and manor houses from several centuries with experiences on the Váh and opportunities for walks across meadows. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the options: the river section in question is navigable year-round, while walks toward Dvoriská cross unmarked meadows. There is also a clear limit on visits to one of the manor houses.

A church and manor houses from different eras

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Philip and James is a single-nave Early Gothic building dating from around 1280. Its presbytery has a rectangular end, and the tower stands in front of the building. Inside are wall paintings by Jozef Hanula from around the turn of the 20th century. The church therefore brings together medieval architectural history and much later wall paintings.

The manor house in Liptovská Teplá is a two-storey, block-like building with five bays and a mansard roof, dating from the second half of the 17th century. It also has a Baroque extension and interior alterations to the upper floor from the second half of the 18th century. A decorative Rococo stove made of white majolica has been preserved in one room. The building’s different features thus point to more than one period of construction.

Another architectural landmark is the Neoclassical Madočany manor house in Liptovská Teplá, which dates from 1830. It had a park and outbuildings, built between 1830 and 1832. Compared with the manor house from the second half of the 17th century, Madočany brings the Neoclassical architecture of the 19th century into focus. The Neoclassical Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands beside a road next to the Váh.

The Váh: navigability and planning a specific trip

The section of the Váh in question is navigable year-round, including by open boats, and is rated as suitable for tourists. A tour description published in 2023 also recounts one planned trip: before the Liptovská Teplá station, boats were inflated on the bank of the Váh; the plan was to travel about 31 kilometers downriver to Kraľovany. When planning your trip, the distinction matters: navigability describes a river section, while the distance refers to this one planned trip.

Cycle routes, meadows and views

Red-marked cycle routes pass through Liptovská Teplá. Check the signage locally, as route information may change. Hiking requires a different approach: no marked hiking trail starts in Liptovská Teplá. Walks toward the Dvoriská hill are possible across the meadows northeast of the village. The access route is unmarked and may vary depending on land use and conditions.

The Madočany swing stands on a lone pine in a meadow near Madočany in Liptovská Teplá. From there, you can see the Low Tatras, parts of the Choč Mountains and the Western Tatras. The walk from Madočany to the swing takes about half an hour. It is an informal attraction maintained locally, not an officially maintained facility; check its condition before setting out.

Visiting in person

The Dvornikovič family manor house is not open to the public and can only be viewed from the adjoining road. Check this access rule again before visiting.
