Ivachnova combines the protected Ivachnovský luh with religious history, a Neoclassical wayside chapel and its location on the Váh. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these topics separately: the floodplain forest is a protected area, while the church, chapel, local festivals and local amenities each offer their own points of interest.

The Ivachnovský luh: nature under protection

The Ivachnovský luh covers 12 hectares and is considered the northernmost floodplain in Slovakia. It is also the last remnant of a floodplain forest in the high-altitude basins of the Western Carpathians. This natural area is specially protected: it is subject to the fifth level of protection, and access is prohibited. Therefore, do not plan to enter it, and check the local protection regulations before you arrive.

Up to 90 bird species occur in the area, and 162 species of higher plants grow there. No marked cycle route passes through Ivachnova, and no marked hiking trail starts there either.

Church and religious history

The Roman Catholic church in Ivachnová is dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius. It was solemnly consecrated on 13 November 1993. The church also contains a relic preserving a drop of blood from Pope John Paul II. Its patron saints, consecration date and relic provide distinct religious points of reference in the local history; visitor access should not be assumed.

A Neoclassical chapel on the Váh

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk (Kaplnka sv. Jána Nepomuckého) is a Neoclassical wayside chapel dating from 1858. It replaced a wooden structure from 1828 and was restored in 1926. These dates trace a clear architectural development: the earlier wooden structure was followed by the Neoclassical chapel and a later restoration.

The chapel stands in the northern part of Ivachnová, on a road along the bank of the Váh. The village’s location by the river is also a useful landmark: a bridge connects Ivachnová with Liptovská Teplá on the opposite bank.

Local festivals with dates

The Cyril and Methodius festivities (Cyrilometodské hody) were held for the 25th time in 2025. The programme that year included a performance by the Los Bombarderos group and dancing with a DJ. There were also refreshments, a raffle, competitions for men, women and children, a children’s corner, a bouncy castle and face painting for children. The activities show the range of that particular edition: music and dancing alongside competitions and specifically listed activities for children.

The Ján’s bonfire event (Pálenie Jánskej vatry) was also described in 2025 as a tradition that continues to be maintained. The event on 21 June 2025 included refreshments, a fire pit for children and entertainment. These details refer to the stated 2025 editions. If a festival is important to your trip, check the dates and programme for your stay in advance.

Local amenities and orientation

The Kozí vŕšok complex, which has a restaurant and a shop, is located on the eastern edge of Ivachnová. Local dairy products are sold there, including cheese made from goat’s, sheep’s and cow’s milk, as well as yoghurts. If you plan to visit, check before your trip whether the restaurant and shop are open.

When choosing accommodation in Ivachnova, you can consider these local features separately: protected nature with access prohibited, historic church buildings, the riverside location, and a restaurant and shop on the eastern edge of the village. As route networks can change, also check the current routes before planning your activities.
