Marked trails lead from Valaská Dubová towards Stredná Poľana and Veľký Choč; in the village, the church, Lourdes Chapel and Jánošíkova krčma tell of different historical layers. When planning, it helps to distinguish the named hiking destinations and their respective time estimates. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip on a longer mountain hike, a shorter ascent or local history.

Hiking: destinations and walking times

The trail from Valaská Dubová to Stredná Poľana is marked blue as Route 2700, Part 1. It involves an ascent of about 600 metres and takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes; the trail passes through the Chočské vrchy Special Protection Area. It starts at the “Valaská Dubová,,OcÚ” bus stop. Check the timetable before travelling. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The blue-marked ascent via Soliská to Poľana is said to take about 2.5 hours; from there, the trail continues towards Veľký Choč. By contrast, the approximately 1 hour 45 minutes refers to the trail to Stredná Poľana. The time estimates are therefore linked to different named destinations. Compare each time with its stated destination rather than applying one walking time to the other destination without checking.

Views and outdoor trails

In good visibility, Veľký Choč offers panoramic views of all the surrounding higher mountain ranges of the Western Carpathians. The view depends on good visibility, so take this into account when choosing your hiking day. Southwest of Valaská Dubová, above the main road from Ružomberok to Dolný Kubín, there is a swing overlooking the area around the village. It is about a 15-minute walk from the cemetery. Check on site whether the swing is still available. A green-marked cycle route also runs through Valaská Dubová.

Church and local history

The present-day Church of St Michael the Archangel was built after the earlier church was demolished in 1860 and was consecrated in 1866. Its interior paintings were created by Jozef Hanula in 1904. The parish of Valaská Dubová is first mentioned in a record from 1332 to 1337. Together, these dates point to different chapters: the parish’s early mention, the construction and consecration of the present-day church, and its later artistic decoration.

A Lourdes Chapel stands right next to the church. It was built to mark the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes. It adds this distinct commemorative association to the church’s architectural and artistic history.

Jánošíkova krčma also connects architectural history with a storytelling tradition: the masonry building stands on the site of an older wooden inn.

An annual event

Every year on the last day of the year, the traditional New Year’s Eve ascent to the summit of Veľký Choč sets off from Valaská Dubová. If this event is important to your trip, confirm the specific event details in advance. This helps you treat the annual summit ascent as a separate occasion alongside the hiking trails, cycle route and local historical themes.
