The Revúca Valley runs from north to south and forms the boundary between the Low Tatras and the Great Fatra. The Revúca River rises below Krížna, flows through the valley and joins the Váh in Ružomberok. In Liptovské Revúce, you can discover mountain landscapes and a deeply rooted folk culture as two distinct aspects of a stay.
Hiking with clear time estimates
The Čierny Kameň educational trail begins in Stredná in Liptovské Revúce and ends in Vyšná near Konštrukta. Along the way, it passes through the NPR Čierny Kameň Nature Reserve and the Ploská saddle. The route is 9.5 kilometres long, takes about five hours and includes eight information boards or stops. The trail is self-guided, can be walked in either direction and is suitable as a circular route in summer and winter.
The named access point is also useful for finding your way when travelling there: the educational trail can be reached from the SAD bus stop Liptovské Revúce, Stredná–požiarna zbrojnica. Check local bus information before travelling.
The route from Liptovské Revúce (Výšné) to Krížna requires a different time commitment: it is 15 kilometres long and takes six hours. It is classified as a moderately difficult alpine hike and a ski touring route. Compared with the roughly five-hour educational trail, it calls for a longer block of time; its alpine classification also provides a different point of reference when choosing a route. For ski touring, this route is designated for use from 15 December to 30 April, and avalanche safety equipment is listed as necessary. Check current conditions before setting out.
Gorge, nature reserve and mountain hut
Prielom Teplého potoka is a natural monument protected since 1984, located in the Teplá Valley within the cadastral area of Liptovské Revúce. The gorge section is about 180 metres long and up to 20 metres deep. Prielom features karst landforms, travertine and river erosion formations; the protected area also includes the 2.4-metre-high lower waterfall of the Teplý potok. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads to Prielom from the Teplé forestry lodge. Check local trail conditions before your visit.
Borišov also appeals to both nature lovers and hikers: the state nature reserve covers 450 hectares and protects communities across up to four forest vegetation zones. The trail from Ploská leads to Chata pod Borišovom. The mountain hut is open year-round and lies at a junction of several marked hiking trails; check current hut services before setting off. The traditional ascent of Borišov takes place every year on 30 December. If you are planning to take part, check that year’s announcement.
Folk architecture and local traditions
Vyšná Revúca is the oldest part of the municipality and preserves its best-maintained folk architecture. This includes wooden houses dating from 1800 to 1870 and an 18th-century chapel. The Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary (Kostol Očisťovania Panny Márie) was built in 1819 in the Baroque-Classical style on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1694. Its features include a wall painting by Jozef Hanula from 1912–1913 and a Neoclassical main altar dating from around 1820.
Another cultural tradition is found in local crafts: “garatová ruža” refers to a distinctive local embroidery tradition involving sewn lace or openwork embroidery. The folk culture shaped by shepherding is known as Ovenálie and has remained almost unchanged to this day. Together with the preserved architecture, it offers a glimpse into the different forms of local tradition, without any one place or building having to tell the whole story.
