Liptovská Štiavnica lies in the valley of the Štiavničanka stream. The village is home to a modern church and a wooden bell tower built in 1933; its historic character also includes chapels, a newer manor house and the fortified settlement hill of Lúčny Hríb. Outdoors, options range from an easy walk in the Komornícka Valley to a short climb up the hill. There is also a signposted route to a mineral spring and a blue-marked cycling route through the village. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to decide whether you would like to focus on architectural history, a walk or a view.
Buildings from Different Eras
The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is one of the municipality’s landmarks and is notable for its modern architecture. Construction began in 1995, and the church was consecrated in December 1999. Beside it stands the wooden bell tower, built as early as 1933. The dates clearly place the tower well before the church and bring the different construction periods of the neighboring buildings into focus.
Two chapels add to the architectural history. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands at the crossroads between Liptovská Štiavnica and Ludrová. This small structure dates from the early 20th century and combines Neo-Romanesque and Neoclassical elements. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is on the main road, about 200 meters below the church. Together, the chapels offer another perspective on the village’s architecture, each with a different location and its own distinctive character.
The newer manor house represents another period. It was built sometime in the 17th century in the Late Renaissance style as a fortified, two-towered manor house. A Baroque renovation followed in 1750, and two towers were added in 1880. Today, the building has four round corner towers. This sequence shows how the building changed over several centuries. The manor house is privately owned and not open to the public; you can only view it from the outside. As private access arrangements may change, check before your visit whether it is still possible to view the exterior.
Walks, Hills and Views
At Lúčny Hríb, a historical dimension accompanies the walk: during the older Iron Age and the Great Moravian period, the hill was an important fortified settlement. The ascent is short and easy, and offers views of the surrounding area. The Komornícka Valley opens into Liptovská Štiavnica and offers the opportunity for an easy walk along a paved or surfaced road. The two options differ mainly in format: a short climb to the historic hill or a walk on a surfaced road in the valley. A blue-marked cycling route also passes through Liptovská Štiavnica.
The Nižňanský medokýš mineral spring is another place to take in the landscape. The spring is located in the protection zone of the Low Tatras National Park. From a resting place by the mineral spring, you can see the Western Tatras, the Choč Mountains and part of the Malá Fatra. Signposts lead from the village center first along an asphalt road and then along a footpath. The spring is about 100 meters from Chalúpkovo. To find your way, it is especially helpful to note the sequence of route sections: the asphalt road is followed by a footpath.
Cross-country skiing can also be part of your travel plans. In Liptovská Štiavnica, you can rent cross-country skiing equipment from ALGY SPORT and arrange lessons with a cross-country skiing instructor there. Rental and lessons may vary by season. If you would like to include cross-country skiing in your stay, check seasonal availability in advance rather than assuming it will be available throughout the year.
