The first documented settlement of the Lengyel culture in Liptov was discovered in Liskovská Cave. Only the entrance is accessible to visitors; the cave is also a national natural monument. Lisková thus brings together a significant archaeological site, nature-related attractions, marked trails and local history.
Cave, Rock and Natural History
Another striking natural formation is Skalná päsť, a six-metre-high natural monument below Mount Mních. Fossils of marine molluscs, nummulites and corals, around 50 million years old, can be found in the Mohylky Nature Reserve. The two sites offer different discoveries: a distinctive rock formation and traces of marine life from a distant past.
Above Liskovská Cave stands the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. It offers views of the Low and Western Tatras. The cave, rock formation, fossils and viewpoint each give the natural side of your stay its own focus.
Distinguishing Hiking Trails and the Cycle Route
A yellow-marked hiking trail starts in Lisková and leads to the trail junction below Smrekov. From there, marked trails lead to Sedlo Spuštiak saddle in Choč National Nature Reserve; others head towards Veľký Choč. You can plan your route around these stated destinations without treating the different connections as one continuous route.
A red-marked cycle route also passes through Lisková. It heads west to Ružomberok or east to Liptovská Teplá. This differs from the yellow-marked hiking trail, which leads from Lisková to the trail junction below Smrekov: the cycle route offers two directions, while the hiking trail has a specific trail junction as its destination.
Rock Climbing at the Lisková Sector
The Lisková climbing sector has around 23 routes of varying difficulty. Rock climbing has been officially permitted there since 1 December 2023. Conditions may change, so check them before your visit. The approximate number of routes and their varying grades can help you consider the sector as a distinct part of your trip planning; they do not replace checking conditions on site.
Church and Traces of Local History
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Lisková was consecrated in 1936. Its freestanding Baroque tower comes from an older church, which was demolished in 1934 because of its poor structural condition. The two dates mark different events: the demolition of the older church building and the consecration of the church.
Vavro Šrobár’s birthplace is in the centre of Lisková, on Vavra Šrobára Street beside the main road. A commemorative plaque was installed on the house in 1937 to mark his 70th birthday. The site thus combines a specific landmark in the centre with a historical memorial.
The Lisková Stations of the Cross comprise 14 stations. They begin at a small chapel and end at a small church dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. This sequence can be distinguished from the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows above the cave: the information about the Stations of the Cross identifies their beginning and end, while the chapel above the cave is associated with views of the two Tatra regions.
Choose Lisková as Your Destination
The Žilina–Košice railway line is also useful for planning your journey: Lisková lies on this line. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: natural monuments and the cave, hiking trails, cycling, rock climbing or local history. You can weigh up these different options when planning your trip rather than trying to fit them all into a packed itinerary. This way, you can choose Lisková based on the interests that really matter to your trip.
