In Ružomberok, two similarly named destinations lead to different places: a blue-marked hiking trail runs from the center through the Vlkolínske lúky to the summit of Malinné. The Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo route, by contrast, goes via Kalvária and the Sidorovo ridge to the Malinô Brdo ski resort. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the summit and the ski resort.
Trails and Landscape
The Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo route offers views of the Liptovská kotlina, the Západné Tatry, the Chočské vrchy, the Nízke Tatry, the Veľká Fatra and the Malá Fatra. Its description thus combines a specific route with wide-ranging landscape views. From the summit of Malinné, the view also extends across the Chočské vrchy, the Západné Tatry and the Liptovská kotlina; parts of the Vysoké Tatry and the Nízke Tatry are also visible, as is the Malinô Brdo ski resort.
The municipal area of Ružomberok lies in the protected zone of the Nízke Tatry National Park. The Brankovský vodopád is another natural attraction: this national natural monument protects a 55-meter-high waterfall. Those interested in this landscape will find both protected nature and viewpoints with named mountain ranges and basins to help with orientation.
Another route leads from Biely Potok via Vlkolínec to Hrabovo and serves as an access route to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vlkolínec, a reserve of traditional folk architecture. It therefore has a different focus from the trails to Malinné or the Malinô Brdo ski resort: here, the emphasis is on access to a district with historic buildings.
Vlkolínec and the City's History
Vlkolínec is a district of Ružomberok and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Its historic buildings include 43 nearly intact farmsteads, the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, built in 1875, a bell tower erected in 1770, and a school building. These dates refer to different things: 1993 marks the site's inscription on the World Heritage List, while 1770 and 1875 are the construction years of two buildings. The history of the place can thus be understood both through its architecture and through its recognition as a World Heritage Site.
Námestie Andreja Hlinku adds another aspect to the historic townscape. The square has an original, narrow medieval plot layout; its basic form took shape around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. This is an urban-development date and differs from the specific construction years of the buildings in Vlkolínec.
Museum and Getting Around
The Liptovské múzeum in Ružomberok has a collection of almost 200,000 objects. As of August 2026, the museum was closed for renovation. Check the latest information before visiting. This extensive collection remains part of the city's cultural profile, while trip planning should take the dated closure information into account.
The U37 006 monument commemorates the historic steam locomotive of the same name. It is located a few dozen meters from Ružomberok railway and bus stations. Its precise location makes the monument an easy-to-find landmark for anyone navigating by these two transport hubs.
Practical Planning
Two stops are listed as starting points for the Biely Potok–Vlkolínec–Hrabovo route: the “Ružomberok,Biely Potok, pri moste” bus stop and the “Pri moste” local public transport stop. Check public transport connections before your trip. You should also check trail conditions before setting out. This is also advisable for the Ružomberok–Sidorovo–Malinô Brdo route.
The different endpoints and themes can help you choose your destinations: Malinné is the summit trail, Malinô Brdo is the route over the Sidorovo ridge, and Vlkolínec is known for its traditional folk architecture. Other attractions include the square with its medieval character and the museum with its large collection. These distinctions keep your plans specific without combining the routes or sights into a single itinerary.
