In Šid, art and cultural history take centre stage in different ways: a memorial house preserves the studio and personal belongings of the Šumanović family, the “Ilijanum” Museum showcases a legacy of naive art, and events range from academic conferences to music programmes. You can plan your visit around the subject that interests you most—an individual artist, collections or the city’s cultural life.

Art and Remembrance in Šid

The “Sava Šumanović” Gallery was founded in 1952 on the basis of a deed of gift. Persida Šumanović donated a legacy of 417 paintings to the city of Šid. The permanent exhibition in the Sava Šumanović Memorial House includes the artist’s studio, authentic furniture, personal belongings of the family and family photographs. The studio and family objects give the exhibition a different focus from a collection of paintings alone: alongside the artwork, visitors also get a glimpse of the artist’s personal surroundings.

Another collection is preserved at the “Ilijanum” Museum of Naive Art. It includes paintings by Ilija Bašičević Bosilj; the legacy comprises a total of 338 paintings and two sculptures. Comparing the two art venues by theme reveals different points of interest: the Memorial House focuses on Sava Šumanović and his family, while the “Ilijanum” focuses on naive art and the work of Ilija Bašičević Bosilj.

Architectural and cultural history are also among the city’s visible themes. The Serbian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas dates from the late 18th century and is protected by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. The archaeological exhibition “Gradina na Bosutu” is housed in the same building as the “Sava Šumanović” Gallery—another subject area, distinct from the art collection.

Library and Events

The “Simeon Piščević” Public Library combines a long cultural history with an events programme. The First Serbian Reading Room in Šid is considered to have been founded on 17 December 1849. Today, the library organises literary and educational discussion events, student workshops and smaller music concerts. Its programme therefore includes both discussion and learning, as well as music.

The three-day “Višnjićevi dani” includes a cultural and artistic programme and an academic conference at the Simeon Piščević Library. The event takes place every year in the last week of October. “Vidovdanski susreti” includes a liturgy and a cultural and artistic programme at the Lazarica Church. The Serbian Orthodox parish of Šid and the Šid Cultural and Educational Centre have been organising this event for years. The two events have different emphases: “Višnjićevi dani” brings together a cultural programme and an academic conference, while “Vidovdanski susreti” combines a liturgy with a cultural programme.

The traditional “Children’s Cultural Summer” takes place at the cultural square in Šid. The “Sremska kobasicijada” offers a different perspective on the city’s events: the 29th edition was held in Šid on 7 February 2026, with 170 samples of dry-fermented sausages entered in the competition. The specific date and competition samples place this edition in context, while the other events mentioned have their own cultural, academic or religious focus.

A Visit Tailored to Your Interests

For an art-historical itinerary, the Memorial House, the gallery and the “Ilijanum” offer different collection themes. Architecture and archaeology add to these perspectives, while the library and events bring in discussion, music, conferences and religious programmes. You can therefore decide in advance whether to focus your stay more on collections and cultural history or on a particular type of event. The Šid Tourist Information Centre, which also has a souvenir shop, is a convenient point of contact in the city centre.
