Visitors wishing to explore cultural history and landscapes on a trip to Kupinovo will find two distinctive themes: the historic Kupinik complex, with the village’s churches and courtyards, and the Obedska Bara Special Nature Reserve. The details range from a medieval fortress to walking trails and a guided excursion on the water. This makes it possible to plan your stay around your own interests, between architectural history and nature experiences.

Kupinovo and the location of Kupinik

The Obedska Bara Special Nature Reserve lies between the Sava River and the settlements of Kupinovo, Obrež and Grabovci. Kupinik is located on a small island in the southeastern part of Obedska Bara, about one kilometre from the Sava. These geographical connections provide a landscape setting for a visit; the historic fortress and the nature reserve are distinct themes that come together in Kupinovo.

Obedska Bara has been a Category I Special Nature Reserve since 1994. The designated walking trails are “Putevi đurđevka”, “Staza potkovice” and “Kružna edukativna staza”. As trail conditions may change, check their condition before setting out.

The Putnik House and Ethno Park

The Putnik farmstead forms the core of the Ethno Park in Kupinovo. The Putnik House is the oldest surviving residential building in the village. It was built at the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century and has fully retained its original appearance. The farmstead is laid out as a traditional 19th-century rural household. Alongside the dwelling, it includes a vajat, a stable, a granary and a bread oven known as a “furuna”.

The ensemble offers a perspective that extends from the individual building to the household of the time: the dwelling and outbuildings together represent the layout of the farmstead. The farmstead is equipped to welcome visitors. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Kupinik and the village churches

Kupinik is one of the better-preserved medieval fortification complexes in Vojvodina. The site was first mentioned in historical sources in 1388 as a Hungarian royal fortification, but is believed to be older. Four projecting corner towers stood along its extensive walls; the entrance was through a fifth tower in the northeastern wall. The first mention and its presumed greater age mark two different points in its history: 1388 is the earliest cited source, not the origin of the fortification.

The Church of Saint Luke was built by Despot Đurađ Branković between 1453 and 1455. It is considered the oldest surviving Orthodox parish church in Vojvodina. The church houses a Baroque iconostasis by Jakov Orfelin, probably created in 1792. This brings together 15th-century architectural history and later artistic decoration.

The other churches also mark distinct periods: the Church of the Holy Spirit was completed in 1814. The present-day Church of Mother Angelina was built in 2007 on the site of the former church and monastery of Obed. The former monastery stood on a small rise within the horseshoe-shaped area of Obedska Bara. Together, these places tell of different periods of construction and use, though their dates do not refer to the same period.

Walking trails and an excursion on the water

Nature experiences include walks along the trails mentioned above and a guided water excursion offered in different formats. The excursion “Panorama of Obedska Bara from a Catamaran” travels across Krstonošić Oko. A professional guide and area warden leads an introduction to the values and history of the nature reserve. Check the excursion details again before your trip.

When planning, you can choose between exploring on foot and taking a water route with a guided introduction. Visitors mainly interested in architectural history will find specific points of interest at Kupinik, the Putnik farmstead and the churches; those who want to focus more on the landscape can explore the trails or take the guided excursion in Obedska Bara.
