Šimanovci combines cultural history with a strong focus on cycling. The house of Ilija Atanacković, the Church of St. Nicholas and several cultural events with specific dates give the town concrete historical points of reference. At the same time, the terrain is considered favourable for cycling. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: for culture, building and event dates are the main points of interest, while cycling involves two distinct considerations: the terrain and the current state of the infrastructure.

Cultural History in a House and a Church

The house of Ilija Atanacković is listed as a cultural monument of great importance in the official Register of Cultural Monuments in Srem. The present-day Church of St. Nicholas offers another historical point of reference: its construction began in 1791 in the Baroque style. The church has an iconostasis carved by Marko Vujatović in 1814. The town can therefore be explored through both a listed house and the construction and artistic history of its church.

There are 23 years between the start of construction and the year the carving was completed. The two dates mark different aspects: 1791 denotes the beginning of the Baroque church’s construction, while 1814 marks Marko Vujatović’s work on the iconostasis. This chronological comparison offers more context than a style label alone, because it distinguishes the building history from the artistic furnishings.

Events with Specific Dates

The international exhibition “Rustika 2025” opened on 22 November 2025 at the Zavičajna kuća in Šimanovci. Also in 2025, the fifth edition of the photography safari “Objektivom kroz Srem,” described as an anniversary edition, took place; Šimanovci was one of its venues. These examples represent different formats: an exhibition with a set opening date and named venue, and a photography event that included several locations. Both references concern 2025.

The “Dani Šimanovaca” is a different kind of event. An August 2018 municipal announcement describes the four-day event, held in connection with the local village Slava, as featuring a cultural and artistic programme. Unlike the 2025 references to an exhibition date or a photography safari, this festival programme is explicitly linked to the village Slava. The years help distinguish the different examples in time and content when planning your stay around cultural interests.

Cycling: Terrain and Infrastructure

Šimanovci is a flat settlement, and its terrain is considered favourable for cycling. At the same time, an earlier municipal survey noted that there were no developed cycle paths in the settlement at the time. These are two separate planning considerations: favourable terrain and the infrastructure status at that time. If you plan to cycle during your trip, check the current status of cycle paths separately.

Different factors can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: cultural history can be explored through named monuments and events with specific dates; cycling involves combining flat terrain with up-to-date route planning.
