Sremska Mitrovica offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: crossing the Sava, exploring the city’s layout, discovering archaeological remains and taking in a varied cultural program. There is also Vinski Park, an annual tasting festival. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you are especially interested in city history, art, tradition or food.
The Sava and the city’s layout
Most Svetog Irineja is a pedestrian bridge over the Sava between Sremska Mitrovica and Mačvanska Mitrovica. It is 262.5 meters long. Its length gives a sense of the scale of the structure, while the two place names show which towns the river crossing connects.
The city’s representative pedestrian zone offers a different perspective on the urban landscape. Established in 2006, it connects the city’s triangular squares and leads to the river. The bridge and pedestrian zone have different points of focus: Most Svetog Irineja is about crossing the Sava, while the zone connects the squares with the river. This comparison offers a practical point of reference if you are as interested in the city’s layout as you are in individual structures.
Tastings in the city park
Vinski Park is held every year in Sremska Mitrovica’s city park. Visitors can sample delicacies and other high-quality, authentic food products there. Unlike museum and archaeology topics, the focus here is on taste. Since annual dates and program details may change and participating producers may vary, check the event information before including Vinski Park in your travel plans.
Archaeology and the museum
In the summer of 1978, the remains of a three-aisled basilica of Saint Dimitrios were discovered while the foundations for the city theater were being excavated. Its apse faced east. The fact that it was discovered during construction of the theater places the find in the context of the city’s history; the three-aisled layout and the orientation of the apse identify specific architectural features. The basilica is an important part of Sremska Mitrovica’s archaeological offerings. The archaeological complex of Carska palata is also an archaeological attraction in the city. Check access arrangements before your visit.
The Museum of Srem organizes themed exhibitions, lectures, workshops and presentations. This program may change over time, so check current dates when planning your visit. The museum’s lapidarium displays ancient stone monuments as well as archaeological finds from Sirmium. Alongside its events, the museum also focuses on material remains from antiquity.
Art and tradition
Srem Folk Fest promotes folk songs, folk dances, folk music and traditional costumes from all the nations of the world. The Sremskomitrovački Salon, also known as the Vojvodina Salon, presents the latest achievements in visual and applied arts and architecture in Vojvodina every two years. Artists from this area exhibit at the Srem Art Salon. Their focuses differ distinctly: Folk Fest highlights music, dance and costumes, while the salons foreground visual and applied arts and architecture, or the work of visual artists. You can therefore choose cultural offerings based on the art form that interests you most.
