Cedrim is shaped by its church architecture, a fortified settlement from the Late Bronze Age and two routes with distinct character. The PR4 – Encosta do Castêlo follows old paths connecting villages; the Ecopista do Vouga runs along a former railway line. You can therefore consider culture, views and outdoor activities as different focal points, rather than treating the two routes as alike.

Churches and local traditions

The Igreja Paroquial de Cedrim is considered one of the best examples of vernacular Baroque architecture in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. Its façade features a cross with vegetal finials and a niche containing a sculpture of Saint John. The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres bears the date 1692; the Capela de Santo Amaro is a 17th-century building. Thus, an exact year is highlighted for one chapel, while the other is dated by century.

The granite Cruzeiro Fontanário, made from local stone, stands at Largo do Chafariz. The Moinho Geraldo is also recommended for a visit; it is estimated to be about 700 years old. The legend of the Mouras tells that the Moors settled at Cabeço das Mouras. An underground passage is said to have led from the Castêlo to the Rio Vouga, allowing them to water their horses. This story is local folklore, distinct from the dated buildings and the archaeological classification of Monte do Castêlo.

Monte do Castêlo: settlement and views

Monte do Castêlo was a small fortified settlement from the Late Bronze Age. The hill is also home to a natural viewpoint at an altitude of 512 metres. From there, the view extends over the Médio Vouga valley and the parishes of Sever do Vouga and Pessegueiro do Vouga. The mountain is also considered a site of great geomorphological interest, with extensive views. The settlement’s history and the landscape perspective offer two distinct ways of looking at this named place.

Walking routes and railway heritage

The PR4 – Encosta do Castêlo begins and ends at Largo do Chafariz in Cedrim do Vouga. It follows old paths connecting villages. Along the route, at Largo das Eiras, there is a group of eleven espigueiros. As well as following historic village connections, the route offers a tangible link to local heritage.

The municipality recommends checking for current information before setting out on the PR4: the municipality’s walking routes are currently undergoing maintenance and reorganisation; restrictions or changes are possible. Take this notice into account when planning your trip.

The Ecopista do Vouga is an approximately 11-kilometre walking and cycling route along the former railway line of the Vale do Vouga. This railway line led to the construction of a stopping point in Cedrim at the beginning of the 20th century. A section of the former line has been preserved as a monument at Apeadeiro de Cedrim. Taking a short break at the former stopping point is one option along the Ecopista. The former railway line thus provides both a historical connection and a basis for choosing between walking and cycling.
