In Sever do Vouga, railway history, regional culture and natural sites come together in places to explore: the Ecopista do Vouga follows a former railway line, the Museu Municipal showcases different aspects of local history, and the Cascata da Cabreia is located within the municipality.

Along the Ecopista do Vouga

The Ecopista do Vouga is an approximately 11-kilometre walking and cycling route. It follows the former railway line of the Vale do Vouga and passes through several railway tunnels. The line’s former use is therefore part of the route itself: the railway that once shaped its course is now used by walkers and cyclists.

A prominent testament to this railway history is the Ponte do Poço de S. Tiago. The bridge was completed in 1913 for the new railway line of the Vale do Vouga and is now used by the Ecopista.

For Ecopista users, the renovated former Gare Paradela station offers a café or bar, an exhibition space and bicycle rental.

Local history, the museum and crafts

In the town centre lies Parque Urbano de Sever do Vouga, covering an area of 37,483 m². Its public facilities include the town library, a sports field, the Museu Municipal, a gerontological park, a blueberry test plot and a section of the riverside promenade.

The Museu Municipal covers the archaeology of Terras de Sever, its industrial and mining heritage, and local ethnography and cultural practices. It also explores the natural wonders of Sever do Vouga and the heritage of small-fruit cultivation, especially blueberries.

A distinct archaeological monument is the Anta da Cerqueira: this passage grave is approximately 5,000 years old and classified as a monument of public interest.

Next to the town’s central garden, Casa do Artesão displays and sells local crafts and regional products. If you plan to visit, check the opening arrangements beforehand.

Nature and time outdoors

Cascata da Cabreia is located in Silva Escura, within the municipality of Sever do Vouga, and is approximately 25 metres high. The site includes watermills and a picnic area; the waterfall is also a pleasant place for a swim. This natural setting brings together scenery, historic milling technology and opportunities to take a break outdoors.

Regional cuisine and blueberries

One of Sever do Vouga’s regional dishes is Sever-style roast veal with oven-baked rice.

Blueberries feature not only at the Museu Municipal and the test plot in Parque Urbano: the Feira Nacional do Mirtilo takes place every year in June. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the exact dates beforehand.
