Zieleniewo’s local history is reflected in two distinct themes: medieval ironworking and architectural heritage from the 19th century. The former manor park, an evangelical cemetery, and three historic buildings each offer a different perspective. For travel planning, it is also worth clearly distinguishing between the local heritage in Zieleniewo and the coastal and nature attractions of the wider destination of Kołobrzeg.
Park, cemetery, and historic buildings
The former manor park on ul. Szczecińska probably dates from the late 19th century; rows of oak and lime trees have survived, while the paths are barely discernible. An evangelical cemetery from the mid-19th century is another historic site. The three historic buildings can be distinguished by their type, house number, and date: the farmhouse at number 15 dates from the mid-19th century, the barn at number 38 from the first half, and the farmhouse at number 45 from the second half of the same century. Historic buildings are not always in good structural condition.
Work and ownership in historic Zieleniewo
In the Middle Ages, Zieleniewo was considered an ironworking center for Kołobrzeg. Bog iron ore was mined in the meadows along the Parsęta and smelted in bloomery furnaces. Bricks were also made in Zieleniewo from local clay. The Pomeranian families Bork and Schlieffen owned estates in the village. The medieval ironworking is clearly distinct in time from the park, cemetery, and architectural heritage of the 19th century. Brickmaking and estate ownership add further economic and social themes to the local history.
Coast and nature in the wider destination of Kołobrzeg
In the wider destination of Kołobrzeg, the focus shifts from local history to the coast and nature. Dźwirzyno Beach is a broad, sandy stretch of coastline bordered by dunes and a pine forest; it is ideal for walks and relaxing in the shade. The Gmina Kołobrzeg also encompasses coastal dunes, peat bogs, pine forests, meadows, salt marshes, and river valleys. Sphagnum mosses and marsh vegetation grow in the raised bogs around Dźwirzyno and Grzybowo; insectivorous plants also occur there.
Dźwirzyno’s harbor was once a fishing harbor and is now a fishing and tourist harbor. It is suited to coastal sailing, fishing trips, and sea excursions in small boats. Grzybowo and Dźwirzyno have three Nordic walking routes of varying difficulty that run along the beaches and through the coastal forest. The 55 km Wokół Jeziora Resko route runs mostly through the Gmina Kołobrzeg and also enters the neighboring Gmina Trzebiatów. The Gminne Centrum Sportu i Rekreacji in Dźwirzyno offers bicycle rentals for exploring the Gmina Kołobrzeg.
