Budzistowo can be viewed through two distinct historical layers: an early medieval hillfort in the centre of the village and a hunting palace dating from around 1900. Coat-of-arms stones in front of St. John the Baptist Church add another layer. In the wider Kołobrzeg destination, coastal, nature and trail themes broaden the view to other places.

Historical layers in Budzistowo

The hillfort is in the centre of the village and dates from the early Middle Ages. Its location and period give the place a specific historical connection. The hunting palace in Budzistowo was built around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the eclectic style. This places two clearly distinct building periods side by side: the early Middle Ages and the period around 1900. The term “eclectic” generally describes a design that incorporates elements from different styles.

On the western rear side of the hunting palace is a terrace overlooking the park, the orchard and the nearby Parsęta River. This view connects an architectural detail with three specific landscape features. Together with the hillfort, the palace illustrates how historical and landscape connections are represented in different ways in descriptions of the village.

Coats of arms in front of the church

The stones in front of St. John the Baptist Church in Budzistowo display the coats of arms of Wrocław and Kraków, as well as Gniezno. Wrocław and Kraków became episcopal sees in the year 1000; Gniezno became an archbishopric. The coats of arms therefore give the stones an ecclesiastical history connection that extends beyond their location in front of the church. It is important to distinguish between them: the first two coats of arms represent episcopal sees, while the third represents an archbishopric.

Kołobrzeg: Coast and harbour in Dźwirzyno

Within the wider Kołobrzeg destination, Dźwirzyno Beach shows another side of the region. The wide, sandy coastline is bordered by dunes and a pine forest, and is suitable for walks and relaxing in the shade. During the bathing season, there are supervised sections of beach, food and drink stalls, changing rooms and toilets. Some beach access points have been adapted for pushchairs and people with reduced mobility. Since these facilities are available during the bathing season, it is worth checking whether they are currently open before visiting.

Dźwirzyno harbour also serves different purposes: formerly a fishing harbour, it is now a fishing and tourism harbour. It is suitable for coastal sailing, fishing trips and sea excursions in small boats. A modern bridge over the channel between Lake Resko Przymorskie and the sea is considered a landmark of Dźwirzyno.

Nature and trails in the wider Kołobrzeg destination

The Kołobrzeg Municipality includes coastal dunes, peat bogs, pine forests, meadows, salt marshes and river valleys. The raised bogs around Dźwirzyno and Grzybowo are also part of this varied landscape. Peat mosses and marsh vegetation grow there, along with carnivorous plants. More than 700 species of vascular plants have been recorded in the municipality, including many protected species. Thus, in addition to the coast, the wider destination encompasses a variety of habitats and a remarkable diversity of plants.

There are three Nordic walking routes in Grzybowo and Dźwirzyno for exercise. They have different levels of difficulty and run along the beaches and through the coastal forest. The 55-kilometre Wokół Jeziora Resko route covers a longer distance: it runs mostly through the Kołobrzeg Municipality and also enters the neighbouring Trzebiatów Municipality. The Gminne Centrum Sportu i Rekreacji in Dźwirzyno offers bicycle hire for exploring the Kołobrzeg Municipality. The route details and landscapes provide different options for choosing between coastal trails and a longer cycling route.
