Shimmering expanses of water, wide-open polders and swaying reed beds give Súdwest Fryslân its own rhythm. They provide waterbirds and meadow birds with food and nesting sites. In spring, golden plovers, black-tailed godwits, lapwings and yellow wagtails are found in the meadows. Alongside this landscape, the towns—with their museums, historic buildings and cultural routes—offer a different way to explore: stories of shipping, crafts and art take you on journeys through a range of themes.
Meadows, Water and Cultural Routes
In 2006, the Dutch government designated Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest Fryslân as a National Landscape. Cultural and historical walking and cycling routes lead to monuments, historic buildings and other heritage sites. If you would like to learn more about the landscape along the way, the Mar & Klif Visitor Centre in Oudemirdum is a good place to start: there, you can learn about the history of Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest Fryslân and discover the distinctive features of its four landscape types. Walking and cycling routes lead from the visitor centre into the surrounding area.
One longer walking option is the 260-kilometre Odulphuspad, which passes through the natural landscapes of Waterland van Friesland. It can be walked in stages of 15 to 20 kilometres. These details provide a useful guide for planning your route without limiting you to a single day’s walk.
Museums of Shipping, Local History and Craftsmanship
In Sneek, the Fries Scheepvaart Museum explores the history of shipping in Friesland, ice sports and the town itself. It also offers a guided walking tour through Sneek’s history with a local guide. In Hindeloopen, Museum Hindeloopen presents the town’s maritime history and its trade on the Baltic Sea. Since 1919, it has been housed in the former town hall. The two museums offer different perspectives: one combines shipping with ice sports and local history, while the other focuses on Hindeloopen’s maritime past.
In Workum, Museum Warkums Erfskip tells the story of the town and its surroundings. It is housed at two historic sites: the authentic Waag (weigh house) and the former town hall. The Jopie Huisman Museum is dedicated to the stories and paintings of Frisian artist Jopie Huisman. Two new exhibitions are on display there each year; their themes may vary.
In Bolsward, Museum De Tiid is housed in the monumental town hall. Guided tours take visitors through the historic building; the tower platform can only be accessed with a guide. In IJlst, the Museum and Workshop Houtstad IJlst are located beside the historic waterway De Geeuw. They explore the history of the timber industry, timber trade and shipbuilding in IJlst. Workshops and other activities for children and adults are held regularly, including woodworking, holiday activities, and music and storytelling evenings. The activities vary.
The Modelspoor Museum Sneek offers a different view of miniature worlds, with accurately scaled railway lines, locomotives, towns and landscapes on display. Moving models and interactive displays complement the exhibition; visitors can operate, play with and experiment with the exhibits themselves. The 11Fountains also bring together art and local history: seven of the eleven fountains are located in Waterland van Friesland. International artists each designed one fountain for one of the eleven Frisian towns, with each fountain reflecting the history and character of its town.
Sailing Traditions and Events
Skûtsjesilen competitions are part of cultural life throughout southwest Friesland each year: the SKS and IFKS hold competitions in the region. Visitors can watch from the shore or from the water on organised boat trips. This offers a choice of two perspectives on the same sailing tradition, without requiring a specific route.
The annual Sneekweek brings sailing competitions, music venues, a fair and other festivities to Sneek; dates and programmes vary. The Fietselfstedentocht has a different focus: held since 1912, it is a 235-kilometre cycling tour passing through the eleven Frisian towns, starting and finishing in Bolsward. Dates and registration requirements may vary, so it is worth checking the latest information before taking part. In this way, Sneekweek—with its programme of events—differs markedly from the long cycle tour through the eleven towns.
