Koudum can be explored from different angles: historic buildings, routes through the surrounding area and activities on the water. The village is located on Lake De Fluessen, centrally within Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest Friesland and close to lakes and forests. Koudum is also in the Friese Meren area, whose lakes are interconnected. Boating, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and flyboarding are possible on the Friese Meren. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on culture, scenery or water sports.
Martinikerk and De Vlijt Mill
Martinikerk was built in 1857. It contains the complete furnishings of the predecessor church, which was demolished and dated from the 17th century. The organ also tells the story of several building phases: the single-manual organ was made in 1858 by L. van Dam en Zonen, using pipework from the Bader organ it replaced. The construction year and the organ’s year are close together, but refer to different parts of the church’s history.
De Vlijt adds another kind of building to this glimpse into Koudum’s history. The mill was moved to Koudum in 1986 and converted into a gallery-equipped Spinnekop-type grain mill. Those interested in architecture and technical structures will find two distinct subjects here: the furnishings and organ of Martinikerk, and the mill’s design and use.
Hiking and cycling
The Koloniale wandeling Koudum is a 9-kilometre walking route that starts and ends at Martinikerk in the centre of Koudum. The Poelspaed, by contrast, focuses on a route around Koudum: the trail runs along the Morra and the Jan Broerskanaal. The two routes offer different points of reference when choosing: a specified distance with a start and finish in the village centre, or a path that passes two bodies of water.
By bicycle, the “Wind en zuivel” route leads from Koudum towards Balk and then back to Woudsend along Lake De Fluezen. This makes it geographically distinct from the walking routes around Koudum and the village centre: its route description connects several named places and follows the lake. When planning, you can choose between a walk with a stated distance, a route around Koudum, and a cycling route towards Balk and Woudsend.
Out on the water
The “Rondje Fluezen-Luts” boating route is 33.7 kilometres long. It passes over the Sleattemer Mar and De Fluezen, as well as through the forest along the Luts. Boats can moor in Koudum along the route. Mooring arrangements may vary by season, so check the rules for your chosen travel period before setting out.
The route offers a specific way to combine the named waters with the stretch of forest along the Luts. In addition, boating, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and flyboarding are possible on the Friese Meren. If you would like local information about walking and cycling routes, boating or regional events, the VVV information point at Muizelaar bookshop provides information for tourists, day-trippers and residents.
Another activity
Pitch & Putt Golf Koudum offers a choice of 9 or 18 holes, as well as footgolf. The activity is suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over. The two hole counts offer a clear choice between the available game options; footgolf adds another possibility. This means that, alongside walking, cycling and water activities, there is also a specific golf activity to choose from.
