Pingjum between a village walk and the sea dike

Pingjum combines a historic walk through the village with an approximately 15-kilometre hiking route along the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband. The walk leads from the Kaatsplaats via Grote Buren and Lammert Scheltesstraat to the Dorpshuis; the hiking route follows a thousand-year-old sea dike. Pingjum is part of the protected town and village landscapes of the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân; the Gulden Halsband is a municipally protected monument. These two forms of protection apply to different things: the village landscape and a single historic landscape feature. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between exploring the village and focusing on the sea dike.

A historic walk through Pingjum

The historic walk begins at the Kaatsplaats, goes via Grote Buren and Lammert Scheltesstraat, and ends at the Dorpshuis. The starting point, street sequence and destination are clearly specified, giving you a clear sense of direction as you explore the village. Photographs show Pingjum at the beginning of the 20th century. They give the route a historical perspective and draw attention to earlier views of the village. QR codes take visitors to explanations on the website and complement the photographs with digital information. The walk thus combines a route through Pingjum with historical images and digital explanations. Information on site may be updated, so check during your visit which explanations are available.

Churches and village history

The Schuilkerkje was built around 1600 as a small house of worship for an Anabaptist community that originated in Pingjum. Its history links a specific building with a religious community from the village. The Schuilkerkje is occasionally used for readings and concerts. If you are interested in attending an event, check in advance whether anything is scheduled for your visit. A bell cast by Willem Wegewaert in 1598 hangs in the tower of the Victoriuskerk. The dates are close together, but refer to different events: the establishment of the Schuilkerkje and the casting of the bell. The church histories thus bring together a local religious community and a precisely dated work.

The Gulden Halsband: dike and hiking route

The Pingjumer Gulden Halsband is a thousand-year-old sea dike. In the past, it protected against the waters of the Marne, an inlet of the Wadden Sea. An approximately 15-kilometre hiking route runs along the Gulden Halsband; check this approximate distance before your trip. Stage 10 of the Klooster Claercamppad initially follows the Gulden Halsband on its way to Witmarsum, then continues towards Witmarsum. The two routes provide different details for planning: the village walk has a specified starting point, street sequence and destination, while the hiking route has an approximate length. The dike thus combines a specific hiking option with its former protective function.
