At the Rode Klif, geological formation and historical remembrance stand side by side. In Warns, village culture and routes add to this perspective. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a specific cultural event, the type of route and a closer look at the history of the landscape.

De Spylder: Culture in Warns

For more than twenty years, De Spylder has been a place for film, theatre, music and village activities in Warns and the region. This mix offers different ways in: film, theatre and music are cultural disciplines alongside village activities, which focus on community life in the village. If you want to plan your stay around a particular performance or concert, check the programme for your travel dates. This lets you pair your cultural focus with a specific event.

Routes: course and distance

The Kuiertocht Warns passes through and along Warns over historic terrain. It follows paved paths throughout and is suitable for wheelchairs, mobility walkers and pushchairs. If the route changes, the surface and suitability may also change; therefore, check the current route before setting out. The course and surface are practical points to consider when planning this walk.

The circular route between Warns, Laaxum and Skarl is 6.7 kilometres long. This gives it a different planning focus from the Kuiertocht: here, the circular route has a specified distance, while the other walk is characterised by its course over historic terrain and paved paths. When comparing the routes, distance and route character are different points of reference. As a circular route, it returns to the starting point; the whole loop measures 6.7 kilometres.

Rode Klif: Ice age and remembrance

Warns is located in the Nationaal Landschap Zuidwest-Friesland. This designation adds a regional context to the individual routes and the Rode Klif. The Rode Klif on the IJsselmeer is 10.35 metres high. It was formed during the penultimate ice age, when vast masses of ice from Scandinavia pushed the ground forward, carrying large stones and gravel with them. Its height and formation offer two perspectives: the height indicates the scale of the cliff, while its formation explains the geological process.

A large erratic boulder at the Rode Klif bears the inscription “Leaver dea as slaef” and commemorates the Battle of Warns. In 1345, the Frisians defeated Count Willem IV of Holland there. Two different timescales meet at the Rode Klif: the penultimate ice age and a dated historical event. The inscription provides a concrete point of reference for remembrance, while the geological formation reaches far back into the history of the Earth.
