Stavoren is surrounded by the IJsselmeer on three sides. At the same time, its historic traces range from medieval trade to buildings in the old harbour. If you are looking for a destination with urban history by the water, distinctive memorial sites and opportunities for walks in the surrounding area, Stavoren offers several clearly distinct themes.

Hanseatic history and local tradition

Stavoren was granted town rights in 1061. The municipality describes it as the oldest town in Friesland. Stavoren joined the Hanseatic League in the 13th century; archaeological excavations reveal a prosperous medieval settlement centred on the waterfront. These details give historical interest a concrete context: the town’s history encompasses both the Hanseatic League and its waterside location.

The 't Ponthús Museum offers a comprehensive historical overview of Stavoren, including its Hanseatic history. The museum’s Toankamer is housed in two former service residences belonging to a shipping company. For many years, this company operated the well-known railway ferry service between Stavoren and Enkhuizen. The museum therefore brings together general town history and a chapter in the history of the former ferry service.

Het vrouwtje van Stavoren, beside the old lock bridge in the old harbour, also points to a storytelling tradition. The figure is also known as Weduwe van Staveren; in one version of the story, the woman is portrayed as a wealthy merchant’s widow.

The old lock, harbour lights and memorial sites

The old sea lock in the old harbour dates from 1576. It is still operated by hand on special occasions, which can vary. The Peilschaalhuis also stands on the south-western edge of the harbour. Those looking at harbour structures will therefore find several historic points of reference, though they do not all have the same function or date from the same period.

Stavoren Lighthouse is more than 15 metres tall, but is not open to visitors. A red and a green harbour light dating from 1884 stand at the harbour entrance. A more recent artistic landmark is the fountain De Vis voor Stavoren: it is part of the 11Fountains project and was created by American artist Mark Dion.

The Vliegersmonument is located at Stadsfenne, near the J.L. Hooglandgemaal. It commemorates the crash of the Halifax 8 A-P bomber on the evening of 14 October 1944. Alongside the harbour structures, it tells a different story from that of the Hanseatic League and trade: the commemoration of a specific event from the Second World War.

Town walks and the IJsselmeer coast

The Stadswandeling Stavoren begins at the VVV visitor centre. The starting point is accessible by train via Stavoren station. Another walking option, the Uitwaaien langs de IJsselmeerkust route, follows the old sea dike for most of its length and partly follows the Zuiderzeepad. Its route is therefore described differently from the starting point of the town walk.

The Fiets & veer cycling and ferry route starts in Stavoren and returns to Stavoren by ferry. Bikes can be taken on every ferry service on this route. Route details and ferry arrangements can change; check the latest information when planning your trip. The Bep Glasius operates as a separate ferry service between Enkhuizen and Stavoren. Check the latest sailing information before travelling.

Nature and water sports in the surrounding area

Near Stavoren, the Bocht fan Molkwar nature reserve extends north from Molkwerum to almost Hindeloopen. The nature reserve itself is not accessible. The De Swan birdwatching hide, by contrast, is accessible year-round. This distinction matters when planning: the nature reserve cannot be treated as an open-access walking destination, whereas the hide offers a separate option that is accessible throughout the year.

Kitesurfing at the Stavoren kitesurfing spot is suitable for advanced riders and is permitted year-round. As operating permits can change, check the local regulations before taking part. This keeps wildlife watching and water sports clearly distinct options, rather than implying from the information provided that they are generally suitable for all visitors.
