Parrega is a medieval terp village with a ribbon-like settlement along the Workumer Trekvaart. In the middle of the village stands the Johannes de Doperkerk on a terp-like elevation, surrounded by a cemetery. The waterway, settlement axis and elevated church site give the village a clearly recognisable historic layout. When visiting Parrega, you can focus on the village’s ribbon-like form, the building history along the Trekweg and a cycling route that includes a stretch through the meadows.
Terp Village and Trekweg
Between 1875 and 1925, the settlement spread in a ribbon-like pattern southwards along the west side of the Workumertrekvaart (Trekweg) and eastwards along the Hortsweg towards Hieslum. The ribbon-like expansion therefore took shape over a longer period and in two different directions. The Trekweg was formerly used for towing barges between the two towns.
Church and Building History
The Johannes de Doperkerk is taking part in Tsjerkepaad in 2026. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the event dates.
At Trekweg 58 stands the former village tavern, now Café De Harmonie. The building is a two-storey transverse structure with a hipped roof, dating from the first half of the 19th century, and is a Rijksmonument (national heritage monument) with monument number 39422. For those interested in culture, the address brings together the building’s former function as a village tavern, a precisely dated architectural form and its heritage status. This makes it possible to explore building history through a specific building alongside the history of the Trekweg. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces that extend over the gable ends; with a gable roof, vertical wall surfaces remain visible at the ends of the roof structure.
Cycling Routes with Different Routes
Shortly after Parrega, the Pontje-Fietsrondje rondom Workum cycling route follows a narrow path through the meadows to Greonterp. This stretch of path and the destination give the tour a distinctive character; at the same time, the narrow route is a practical consideration when planning. As surface conditions can change, check the current path conditions before setting off.
Another Frisian cycling route, Fietsroute langs trekvaarten in Friesland, follows two towpaths: along the Workumertrekvaart between Workum and Bolsward, and along the Bolswardertrekvaart between Bolsward and Leeuwarden. The routes differ in their course: one focuses on the narrow meadow path to Greonterp, while the other follows towpaths along two waterways.
A Fishing Spot on the Waterway
The Workumertrekvaart fishing spot is in Parrega and is considered especially rich in fish. For anglers, it offers a different focus from the cycling routes: rather than the route or destination, the focus here is the fishing spot on the Workumertrekvaart, which is considered rich in fish.
