In Mozambique’s protected areas, you’ll encounter a wide variety of landscapes and discoveries: islands and marine areas, savannas and floodplains, lagoons, and a mountainous region with endemic species and cave paintings. Its cultural heritage also has distinctive sites, including Ilha de Moçambique, with its defensive structures and religious buildings. Nature, wildlife observation and history offer different ways to tailor your trip to your personal interests.

Islands and Marine Areas

In Cabo Delgado Province, Quirimbas National Park was established in 2002. It covers around 7,500 km² of land and sea. The Quirimbas Archipelago consists of 27 islands, 11 of which are part of the national park. This makes it possible to distinguish the size of the archipelago from that of the protected area without treating them as equivalent.

A different island scale awaits you in Bazaruto Archipelago National Park: established in 1971, it comprises five islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangué. Comparing this with the 27 islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago reveals two clearly distinct sets of figures; in the Quirimbas area, only some of the islands are part of the national park. The names and their respective designations are useful points of reference when planning your trip.

Savannas, Floodplains and Lagoons

Limpopo National Park is located in Massingor District in Gaza Province and was established in 2001 in partnership between the government and the Peace Parks Foundation. Sandy plains, mopane savannas, wooded savannas and floodplains characterize the landscapes described here. Elephants, rhinos and buffalo are among the animals that live there. If you’re interested in different types of savanna and large wild animals, this national park offers several specific points of interest.

For visitors staying overnight in Limpopo National Park, leisure activities to consider include canoeing, guided tours and fishing. Ask locally about current arrangements. This is especially useful if a particular activity is important to your plans.

Maputo National Park is part of the transfrontier Libombos Conservation Area, which extends across Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland. At the Chingute, Piti and Maundo lagoons, you can observe numerous bird species, as well as hippos and Nile crocodiles. This natural focus differs from the savannas and floodplains of Limpopo National Park: here, the named lagoons and the wildlife observed there set the scene.

Mountains, Biodiversity and Cultural Traces

Mount Binga rises to around 2,436 metres in Chimanimani National Park; it is the highest point in Mozambique. The park is home to a wide variety of plants, as well as endemic bird, reptile and butterfly species. Cave paintings add a cultural discovery to the natural attractions. If you’d like to combine these interests, you’ll find several points of interest here, without needing to follow a particular route.

Activities listed for Chimanimani National Park include hiking, climbing, horseback riding, photo safaris, canoeing, historical and cultural tourism, and birdwatching. The park also has several road links with the north, centre and south of Mozambique, as well as with Zimbabwe. Check current road conditions before making specific journeys, and ask locally about arrangements for activities.

Nature and cultural themes also come together in Banhine National Park: options listed include walking trails, safaris, canoeing and cultural tourism. Traditional fishing, rainmaking ceremonies and oral storytelling traditions are among the possible cultural encounters. Sacred sites preserved by local communities can also be visited. If you plan such visits, check locally whether access is possible.

Ilha de Moçambique is a calcareous coral reef in the Indian Ocean, at the entrance to Mossuril Bay in Nampula Province. Its heritage includes additional defensive structures and numerous religious buildings, many of them dating from the 16th century. The island complements the nature and park themes with a place where history can be explored through specific buildings.
