Inhambane reveals its cultural and historical character through its buildings, collections and market: a church and a mosque date back to the 19th century, alongside historic trading houses and a museum with regional cultural objects. Travellers who place particular importance on a city’s history when choosing a destination can weigh up its different historical highlights here. The province of the same name offers a different perspective; its protected areas belong to the region, not to the description of the city.

City History in Its Buildings

Inhambane preserves buildings of remarkable architectural consistency. The Igreja de Inhambane, also known as Velha Igreja or Velha Catedral de Inhambane, was built in 1885. The Inhambane Mosque dates from the mid-19th century. Together with the historic trading houses, they offer different points of reference for exploring the city’s architectural history.

The Casa da Dona Adelaide Anna Teixeira, also known as Palácio dos Fornaziny, was built in 1902 and is located on what is now Rua do Chimoio. The Casa Oswald Hoffann was built earlier: in 1890, the Sociedade Madal constructed it. The German company Oswald Hoffann later took over the building to conduct business there. The house’s subsequent commercial use is therefore also part of its history. The buildings mentioned differ in their names, dates and documented uses—a concrete way to explore the city’s history that goes beyond a single year.

Museum and Market

The collection at the Museu de Inhambane includes objects from the colonial period, historical photographs and regional cultural objects. The items listed include musical instruments, agricultural tools and various objects typical of African culture. One particularly specific item is a metal Pá de Lobolo: it was presented to the wife in connection with the Lobolo marriage tradition. Thus, broad collection themes sit alongside a single object with its own connection to tradition.

Inhambane’s market offers handicrafts like those found in the markets of Maputo, at slightly lower prices. Another explicitly historical detail concerns Friday: it was considered market day in Inhambane and drew the largest crowds because a ship arriving from South Africa unloaded mine workers. This former weekly rhythm is part of the market’s history and is distinct from the handicrafts described there.

The Province as a Different Travel Perspective

When you see the name Inhambane, it is worth distinguishing between the city and the province of the same name. The natural areas that follow are located in the province and do not describe the cityscape. Pomene National Reserve was established in 1964 and is located in the Massinga District. Its habitats include vegetated dunes, savannas, mangroves and swamps. The Mudocha River is suitable for canoeing; the reserve also contains the ruins of the Hotel de Pomene, built in 1963.

In the northwest of the province, Zinave National Park lies along the Save River. It forms a transition between humid tropical and dry areas. Its main attraction is considered to be the riverine forest along the Save, which is home to a diverse range of trees and large mammals. This is a different landscape focus from the habitats in Pomene National Reserve.

Bazaruto Archipelago National Park was established in 1971 and lies along the coast of the Vilankulo and Inhassoro districts in Inhambane Province. It extends across five islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangué. Its landscapes include beaches, natural pools with turquoise water and large parabolic dunes of white sand. Flamingos live in the saltwater lagoons; underwater, encounters with dugongs, dolphins and sea turtles are possible. Those weighing up city history against the province’s natural attractions will find clearly distinct areas of interest.
