The Quirimbas Archipelago comprises 27 islands, 11 of which belong to Quirimbas National Park. These figures refer to two distinct things: the archipelago as a group of islands and the park as a protected area that includes part of it. Extensive coral reefs lie in the waters of the archipelago. Dolphins, turtles, dugongs and rays are among the species found there. The islands are therefore interesting not only for their layout, but also for the marine diversity in their waters.

The Sea and Marine Life

In Quirimbas National Park, activities on the sea include snorkeling, scuba diving, canoeing and boat trips. The activities differ primarily in perspective: snorkeling and scuba diving take you beneath the water’s surface, while canoeing and boat trips take place on the water. More than 375 fish species are found in the national park. This figure shows that the marine environment is characterized not only by activities, but also by great biological diversity.

Nature Between Lagoon and Mainland

Cagavera Lagoon in Quirimbas National Park is a place to observe rare bird species; turtles nest along the park’s shores. Lagoon wildlife watching and nesting along the shores are thus two distinct nature-related themes. In Meluco District, the inselbergs offer opportunities to experience the mainland’s fauna and flora—a different perspective on nature from the archipelago’s reefs and marine species. The Quirimbas Biosphere Reserve site also includes a freshwater system, which includes the Montepuez River.

Cultural Exchange on Ibo Island

On Ibo Island, Stone Town is an outstanding tangible expression of cultural encounters and exchange. Its architecture, urban setting and vibrant culture reflect influences from Europe, Arabia and India. Over several centuries, these influences came together and, combined with traditional Swahili techniques, gave rise to a distinctive culture. The exchange is tangible in the architecture and urban setting; the vibrant culture broadens the perspective beyond the built environment. In Cabo Delgado, nature and cultural discoveries thus stand side by side as distinct areas of focus.

Quirimbas National Park in the Wider Context of Mozambique

As part of the wider travel destination of Mozambique, Quirimbas National Park was established in Cabo Delgado Province in 2002 and covers around 7,500 km² of land and sea. Its area therefore includes both land and sea. This fits the region’s different perspectives on nature: alongside the islands and marine environment, the destination also encompasses mainland nature and a freshwater system.

When planning your trip, you can organize these themes according to your interests: the archipelago draws attention to islands, reefs and marine activities; Meluco represents mainland flora and fauna, while Stone Town puts cultural exchange in the foreground. These differences can help you choose the focus for your explorations in Cabo Delgado.
