Niassa National Reserve is home to granite inselbergs with cave paintings that are sacred to local communities. This combination of landscape and cultural significance gives a trip to Niassa more than one possible focus. You can consider the reserve’s natural environment, historic sites and travel arrangements as separate planning topics, then decide which ones matter for your stay.

Landscape and Activities

Niassa National Reserve includes miombo and mountain forests, riverside vegetation, open savannahs and prairies. This means wooded and riverside areas sit alongside open landscapes. Activities in the reserve include hiking, driving, safaris, canoeing and climbing. This range offers different ways to focus your trip: you can explore nature on foot, on the water or by car. Check with operators in advance to find out which arrangements can be made for your trip.

Niassa Special Reserve covers approximately 42,000 km². This is an approximate figure that gives an idea of the area’s size.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Niassa National Reserve can be reached by charter flights from Lichinga and Pemba airports. Airstrips are located in Mbatamila, the reserve’s headquarters, as well as in Mecula and Kambaco. As access arrangements may change, check operational availability before your trip.

Lichinga is connected by paved roads to other cities in northern Mozambique. Lichinga Airport is served regularly by LAM flights from Maputo and other cities. As flight connections are subject to change, check current services before travelling. Charter flights to the reserve and regular LAM flights to Lichinga Airport are different ways of getting there.

Historic Sites

The historic site of Matchedje hosted the II FRELIMO Congress from 20 to 25 July 1968. Another facet of history is represented by the Anglican Mission of Messumba: built around 1930, it was constructed mainly from locally available stone on the crest of a mountain range. Matchedje represents a congress with precisely documented dates, while Messumba represents a mission with an approximate construction date and a building style using locally available stone. This makes it possible to consider the history of the congress and mission architecture as distinct cultural highlights.

More Nature in Mozambique

Lake Niassa is another natural attraction in the wider destination of Mozambique. Its calm, clear waters are considered suitable for fishing, diving, boating and canoeing. Whether these activities are organised depends on local conditions and operators. Compared with Niassa National Reserve, Lake Niassa focuses on water-based activities, while the reserve combines different landscape types with a wider range of activities.
