Gaza Province: Nature and History
In the wider destination of Gaza Province, the beaches extend along 150 km of coastline. The province also has a variety of landscapes and historic sites, offering another perspective for travelers who want to explore more than just coastal activities.
The province also features varied coastal landscapes: Praia de Zongoene lies at the mouth of the Limpopo River, where the river meets the ocean. A rocky reef protects the beach at Praia de Xai-Xai from the open sea swell; at low tide, it forms natural pools. The region’s coastal scenery therefore ranges from a river mouth to a beach shaped by a reef and the tides.
Limpopo National Park in Gaza Province, together with the border areas of South Africa and Zimbabwe, forms the transfrontier Greater Limpopo region. Its landscapes include sandy grasslands, mopane savannas, wooded savannas, and floodplains. The area along the Shingwedzi River is considered suitable for wildlife viewing, challenging hikes, and safaris. The Massingir Dam is considered a suitable place for various water sports.
Banhine National Park in Gaza Province is characterized by semiarid savanna, lagoons, and baobab trees. Its extensive seasonal wetlands have earned it the name “mini-Okavango” because they share ecological characteristics with the Okavango Delta. Banhine is also an important stopover for migratory birds and is home to a diverse range of land and water birds. Visitors can explore hiking trails, go on safaris, canoe, and enjoy cultural tourism there.
The cultural history of Gaza Province also offers points of interest. The Nwadjahane Open-Air Museum is a historic site and the birthplace of Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, the first president of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO). Chibuto was the first capital of the Gaza State and the place where Ngungunhane, the last emperor of Gaza, was captured. A monument in his honor stands in the center of Chibuto.
