Gaza Province offers a variety of landscapes: savannas and wetlands shape the natural environment in its national parks, while its beaches stretch along more than 150 kilometres of coastline. Historic sites also give the region its distinctive character. You can tailor your explorations to the themes that interest you most.
National Parks and Landscapes
The Limpopo National Park in Gaza Province forms the transboundary Greater Limpopo area together with the border regions of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Sandy grasslands, mopane savannas, wooded savannas and floodplains characterise the park. The area along the Shingwedzi River is considered suitable for wildlife viewing, challenging hikes and safaris. Different ways to experience nature come together here, from wildlife watching to more active pursuits.
Banhine National Park offers a different kind of landscape: semi-arid savanna, lagoons and baobab trees characterise the area. Its extensive seasonal wetlands share ecological features with the Okavango Delta, earning the park the name “Mini-Okavango.” Banhine is also an important stopover for migratory birds and is home to a diverse range of land and water birds. Activities in the park include hiking trails, safaris, canoeing and cultural tourism. This brings the chance to observe changing habitats together with different ways to experience the park.
Various water sports are considered suitable activities at the Massingir Dam. Hiking, cycling within the municipality and boat trips along the reservoir are also mentioned for Barragem de Massingir. Activities range from getting active on land to trips on the water.
Beaches with Distinctive Features
Along the coast, it is worth distinguishing between the different beach profiles. Praia do Bilene is considered a scenic beach; activities include entertainment, ocean safaris, boat trips, sport fishing, diving, jet skiing and canoeing. Praia de Zongoene lies where the Limpopo flows into the ocean. At Praia do Xai-Xai, a rocky reef protects the beach from the swell of the open sea; natural pools form at low tide.
Praia de Chizavane and Praia de Chidenguele are also associated with calm waters and an absence of dangerous waves. Both are considered suitable for swimming and diving; coral reefs and a variety of fish species are among their described features. At Praia de Chidenguele, coral reefs can be seen without diving to great depths. Kings Pool, a natural pool on the beach, is also located at Chidenguele. These differences make it possible to discover the coast not just as a long stretch of beach, but through its specific landscape and natural features.
History Across Several Places
Chibuto was the first capital of the Gaza State and the place where King Ngungunhane was captured; he was the last emperor of Gaza. A monument in his honour stands in the centre of Chibuto. Mandlakazi was the last capital of the Gaza State. A monument in Ngungunhane’s honour was also erected in the town centre there. Comparing the two places reveals different chapters of this history: Chibuto as the first capital and the site of his capture, and Mandlakazi as the last capital.
A battle took place in Bilene on 8 September 1895. A pedestal bearing a commemorative plaque honours Mozambican fighters who died resisting the Portuguese colonial occupation. A battle against Portuguese colonial expansion also took place in Mandlakazi; a pedestal there commemorates fallen Mozambican fighters. Another historic site is the open-air museum in Nwadjahane, the birthplace of Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane, the first president of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO).
