A geopark with geological sites, a national park with a sea of sand and volcanoes: East Java offers many different ways to experience the landscape. There are also waterfalls, historic buildings, museums, traditions and coastal towns. The themes you want to shape your trip can help you choose a suitable base.

Volcanic Landscapes and Trails

The Ijen Geopark stretches across the regencies of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso and includes 21 developed geological sites. The inventory may be updated by the responsible administration. The geopark is being developed as a sustainable geotourism area that combines nature conservation, education and the empowerment of local communities.

At Ijen Crater, blue flames may appear at dawn, usually around 5 a.m. A 3-kilometre trail leads from the Paltuding post to the edge of the caldera. Visibility and access may depend on conditions, so check local access requirements before your trip.

Another volcanic landscape defines Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in central East Java. It covers 800 square kilometres. The park includes the 10-kilometre-long Tengger Sand Sea, from which four volcanic cones have emerged. Clearly marked trails cross the sand sea to the foot of Mount Bromo.

Mount Semeru is Java’s highest mountain. The ascent trail starts in the village of Ranu Pani and leads to the natural lake of Ranu Kumbolo. From Malang, the route runs via Tumpang to Ranu Pani; from Tumpang, a jeep or truck is available. Before setting out, check permits and trail conditions, as well as current transport arrangements and agreements with operators.

The trail descriptions offer different kinds of guidance: at Ijen, the distance to the crater rim is given as 3 kilometres; at Madakaripura, the approximate walking time and terrain are described; and at Tumpak Sewu, the hike is rated as moderate. This lets you consider distance, duration and trail character separately when planning.

Waterfalls and Natural Areas

Madakaripura Waterfall is located in Probolinggo Regency, within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Its cascade is 200 metres high. A cave is said to be the place where the military commander Gajah Mada held his final meditation. Access involves an approximately 20-minute hike across rivers and along a rocky trail; conditions on the trail may vary.

Tumpak Sewu is in Lumajang and stretches across the border between Malang and Lumajang. The waterfall is approximately 120 metres high. Reaching it requires a moderate hike through rugged terrain, which can change. Baluran National Park presents a different type of landscape: it consists mainly of open savannahs where wild animals roam freely. There are trails for tourists and school groups around Bekol and Bama; check local availability before your trip.

Meru Betiri Nature Reserve is another notable landscape in East Java. It covers 580 square kilometres. These extensive protected areas and individual waterfalls offer different nature experiences, though no single route connects all of these places.

History, Art and Tradition

The Trowulan archaeological complex in Mojokerto once served as the capital of the Majapahit Kingdom. Candi Jabung, a Hindu temple from the era of this kingdom, is located in Malang Regency. Its square structure and reliefs can be understood through the subjects depicted: alongside scenes from Hindu mythology, there are also motifs from Wayang stories.

At the Indonesian Islamic Museum KH Hasyim Asy'ari in Jombang, collections explore the emergence of Islam in Indonesia, the struggle for independence and the intellectual contributions of Islamic figures. The exhibits include Mbah Hasyim’s robe and old manuscripts; they are part of an interactive visitor experience. Check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Another form of cultural expression is Reog Ponorogo, a traditional theatrical dance from Ponorogo Regency. At its centre is the striking Dadak Merak mask, featuring a tiger image and magnificent peacock feathers. Traditionally, Reog is performed at village-cleansing ceremonies, weddings, religious celebrations and national holidays, as well as to welcome honoured guests. Individual performances vary by community and date.

Coast and Regional Trip Planning

In Sendang Biru, visitors can rent motorboats or rowboats from local fishermen to explore the Sempu Strait. There is also a landing and fish auction area: visitors can buy fresh seafood and grill it right on the beach. Availability, arrangements and prices may change; confirm them before your visit. Pantai Popoh, meanwhile, is a beach on a bay surrounded by green hills in Tulungagung Regency.

When looking for a hotel in East Java, the places and interests at the heart of your trip can be decisive: volcanic trails, natural areas, cultural sites or the coast.
