Limestone mountains, coastline, and distinctive cultural forms give Pacitan many different facets. If you are looking for accommodation here, you can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most: coastal landscapes, a boat trip, or insights into traditional forms of storytelling and performance.

Karst and Coast in Pacitan

Most of Kabupaten Pacitan consists of the limestone mountains of the Pegunungan Kidul range. The beaches are also part of the destination’s character: white sand, striking karst cliffs, and the surf of the Indian Ocean shape the coastline. Pantai Klayar combines white sand with a blue sea, rocky cliffs, and a largely unspoiled landscape. Pantai Buyutan offers a different combination of white sand, clear seawater, cliffs, and coral rocks.

These differences make the two coastal destinations easy to distinguish without reducing them to the same beach scene. At Pantai Buyutan, simple beach activities are also a focus alongside the landscape: you can walk along the shore, relax to the sound of the waves, and photograph the coast. Pantai Klayar, by contrast, can be characterized by the combination of sand, blue sea, and rocky cliffs. Together, the beaches show which landscape features are characteristic of Pacitan.

Boat Trip, Cave, and Waves

A guided boat trip is offered on the Sungai Maron along a 4.5-kilometer route; it takes about 45 minutes. This experience therefore has a specified route length and approximate duration. Gua Tabuhan offers a different perspective on the landscape: stones can be struck there to produce sounds similar to those of traditional gamelan instruments.

The relatively large waves at Pantai Pancer attract surfers. Conditions vary with the weather and swell, making this beach a different choice from a peaceful stroll along Pantai Buyutan. Comparing the coastal experiences, you will find both a guided river trip and opportunities to focus on the beach and surf.

Wayang Beber and Other Cultural Forms

Wayang Beber Pacitan was recognized as national intangible cultural heritage by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture in 2015. The performance form includes painted picture scrolls spread out in front of a dalang. The dalang narrates the scenes depicted on them. This storytelling tradition makes Wayang Beber a performance in which a sequence of images is combined with oral narration. The described performance involves five people: four play the rebab, kendang, kenong in Laras Slendro, and gong; one person takes on the role of the dalang.

The oldest Wayang Beber is located in Desa Karang Talun, Kelurahan Gedompol, Kecamatan Donorojo, Kabupaten Pacitan. Another recognized art form is Kethek Ogleng from Desa Tokawi, Kecamatan Nawangan. It was recognized as national intangible cultural heritage in the performing arts category in 2019. The two examples offer different points of connection: Wayang Beber combines painted picture scrolls with a narrated story, while Kethek Ogleng is classified as a performing art.

The Monumen Panglima Besar Jenderal Soedirman in Pakisbaru, Nawangan, is also among Pacitan’s historical subjects. The monument includes a diorama about Jenderal Soedirman and his guerrilla war in Pacitan. Alongside traditional art forms, a historical site and its depiction in the diorama are therefore also options to consider when planning your trip.

Traditional Customs

Ceprotan is a long-standing tradition of the residents of Desa Sekar, Kecamatan Donorojo, held annually in the Javanese calendar month of Longkang. Visitors came to the 2025 celebration from other parts of Desa Sekar and from areas outside Pacitan. The tradition can thus be understood both through its annual place in the calendar and its significance beyond the village. Kabupaten Pacitan also belongs to the UNESCO-recognized Gunung Sewu Geopark, which is part of the Global Geoparks Network.

There are several different focuses to choose from when planning your stay: coastal landscapes and beach activities, the guided trip on the Sungai Maron, or cultural and historical subjects such as Wayang Beber, Kethek Ogleng, and the Soedirman Monument. You can prioritize destinations according to which of these subjects you want to shape your trip, and look for hotels in Pacitan that suit your plans.
