Prigen can be explored from a cultural perspective through two topics: the Sedekah Bumi celebrations of 2018 and 2024, and the tomb of Mbah Andan Bumi. The celebrations represent a communal event, while the tomb is a single religious site. This lets you distinguish between different cultural interests when choosing a destination.

Sedekah Bumi: two specific celebrations

In 2018, hundreds of people from the community took part in a carnival. At the time, Sedekah Bumi was described as a tradition held every two years. The celebration also represented togetherness: food was given to others. This sharing makes the communal aspect of the custom tangible. After the Ancak were shared, Tayuban, a dance with a Sinden, continued until the afternoon. Ludruk performances began in the evening and lasted until morning. Thus, the 2018 celebration focused on both sharing food and a succession of dances and performances.

A different emphasis can be seen in the celebration on June 9, 2024. Fruit, vegetables, various cakes, market pastries, and snacks were arranged into huge Ancak. A total of 46 of these creations were carried through the village and then brought together in the village square for prayer. Afterward, the Ancak were emptied; participants could compete for their contents and take them home. Some decorated Ancak featured replicas of domestic and wild animals. Kesenian terbangan, bantengan, and barongsai also took part in the procession. The celebration thus included the arrangement of the produce, the procession, the prayer, and various performances.

The years show different emphases: in 2018, the focus was on sharing food and performances that continued until morning; in 2024, the 46 carried Ancak, the prayer in the village square, and performances in the procession are specifically mentioned. If you are especially interested in the sequence of events, the 2018 celebration is described in greater detail. The date of June 9 refers to the 2024 celebration.

The tomb of Mbah Andan Bumi

The tomb of Mbah Andan Bumi, together with his wife’s tomb, is located in the Islamic cemetery of Kelurahan Prigen, west of Masjid Jami’ Al-Firdaus. People from Prigen and elsewhere visit it frequently. This site differs from the communal celebration: the focus is on Mbah Andan Bumi, his wife, and the location of the tomb. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what visiting options are available.

Two questions are key to planning your trip: If you want to plan your trip around Sedekah Bumi, check the current event date. For the tomb, you should confirm visiting options in advance. This way, you can choose between a celebration and a single cultural site as the focus of your stay.
