In Bondowoso, you’ll encounter natural sites whose names and actual features do not always tell the same story. Kawah Wurung got its name from a hollow in the hills that resembles a crater; however, there is no crater there. Green hills and grasslands define the area. Kawah Wurung is located in Kalianyar village, in the Ijen subdistrict of Bondowoso Regency.
Among Hills, Water and Coffee
Air Terjun Blawan waterfall is also located in Kalianyar village, in the Ijen subdistrict. It is the lower course of sulfurous seepage from the Ijen crater and is surrounded by macadamia trees and moss. At its outlet, the water flows directly into the ground. At Blawan, the water’s source, the surrounding vegetation and its distinctive outlet all contribute to the natural setting.
Air Terjun Tancak Kembar is in Bondowoso Regency, East Java, and consists of two waterfalls side by side. Its name refers to this pair. The difference from Kawah Wurung is clear: there, a hollow in the hills resembles a crater; here, two waterfalls stand side by side. The sites thus showcase different natural features, each with its own distinct character.
Blawan coffee plantation is in the Sempol subdistrict of Bondowoso Regency, on the slopes of Ijen at an elevation of about 900 to 1,200 meters above sea level. The regency’s natural landscape thus ranges from green grasslands and water to a coffee plantation on Ijen. The elevation is an approximate range and offers additional context for this landscape.
Railway Museum and Megalithic Heritage
The Bondowoso Railway Museum is considered the first railway museum in East Java. Alongside its natural attractions, it offers a distinct cultural focus: railway heritage, closely reflected in the museum’s name. For anyone interested in railway history, this provides a clear thematic starting point.
Pusat Informasi Megalitikum Bondowoso (PIMB) was established near the Pekauman megalithic site as an educational institution dedicated to Bondowoso’s megalithic heritage. It provides information about the site’s objects. This focuses attention on a specific place and its megalithic objects, rather than treating the heritage as an abstract subject. PIMB’s educational role gives it a different emphasis from the railway museum.
Rafting, Paragliding and Ijen
For active pursuits, there is also Bosamba Rafting in Krocok village, in the Taman Krocok subdistrict. The rafting course has 23 rapids. As operating conditions can vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before making specific plans. The number of rapids is a tangible feature of the course, while Puncak Megasari offers a different focus.
Puncak Megasari is a mountainous area in the Ijen subdistrict with a paragliding launch site. It combines a mountain setting with a launch site for this outdoor activity. At Ijen Crater, bluish flames may appear at sunrise; this phenomenon is known as Blue Fire and usually occurs at around 5 a.m. Visibility can vary, so it is advisable to check conditions in advance if you hope to see it.
A further timing reference at Ijen Crater is the walk along the crater rim: visitors can walk there for about 1 to 1.5 hours. Trail conditions may change, so you should check them in advance. The approximate walking time and the possible appearance of Blue Fire at around 5 a.m. answer different planning questions; a sighting is not guaranteed.
Bondowoso in the Wider Ijen Geopark
The Ijen Geopark spans Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies within the broader destination of East Java. It is being developed as a sustainable geotourism area intended to bring together nature conservation, education and the empowerment of local communities. This regional context connects Bondowoso’s individual sites to a wider area without treating its distinct landscapes and experiences as interchangeable.
