Ebeleben offers a striking contrast between baroque garden art and a pond landscape to the west of the town. There are also two different route options: a loop around the Ebeleben ponds and a circular route that takes in several places. This makes it easy to shape your stay around specific cultural and landscape themes.

Baroque Gardens in Ebeleben

The palace park in Ebeleben is a late-Baroque terraced garden. Its features include the Palm House, also known as the orangery, and the Great Cascade, dating from 1774. Ebeleben Palace Garden has been restored; its original 1775 design can still be appreciated today. The two dates refer to different garden features and provide a specific historical context for your visit.

Ponds and Paths Around the Town

The Ebeleben ponds lie to the west of the town. The lake district is a habitat for numerous waterbirds and provides a distinctive landscape alongside the gardens. The circular route around the ponds can start at the palace park or at Teichweg. This gives you two possible starting points for the same loop.

The 3-Orte-Rundweg (Three-Place Circular Route) offers a different route. It starts at Ebeleben Market, passes the ponds, HolzsuĂźra and Wiedermuth, and returns to Ebeleben. It is 11.3 km long. While the pond loop focuses on the body of water, the Three-Place Circular Route passes several named stops. This distinction helps you choose without assuming a walking time or particular trail conditions.

Hotzenberg can also be reached from Ebeleben Market: the route described goes along Lindenstraße and through the Thomas-Müntzer-Siedlung towards Himmelsberg. Further cultural, mining and hiking topics are covered under the broader destination of Kyffhäuserkreis.

The Barbarossa Cave is an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865 in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. It was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who is said to return. Geology, mining history and a regional legend therefore all contribute to its story.

The Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers guided tours year-round at a depth of 670 metres. These include an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine also has the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly. The tours and event program offer different ways to experience the same mine.

Another attraction is Funkenburg in Westgreußen: the open-air archaeological museum features Germany’s only reconstruction of a Germanic settlement on a prominent hill spur above the Helbe valley. Its educational activities include pottery, baking, wool processing, fishing-net making and archery. The site thus combines a reconstructed settlement with hands-on cultural activities.

The routes can also be compared by length: the Three-Place Circular Route in Ebeleben is 11.3 km long, while the Kyffhäuserweg in the broader Kyffhäuserkreis is 37 km long. The Kyffhäuserweg starts and ends in Bad Frankenhausen. Its three stages lead from there to Barbarossa Cave, onward to the Kyffhäuser Monument, and back to Bad Frankenhausen. It is certified as a Quality Trail “Wanderbares Deutschland,” is well signposted and is regularly checked for defects. A shorter regional alternative is the four-kilometre forest adventure trail between the ruins of Rothenburg and the Kyffhäuser Monument, with ten activity stations.

For people with limited mobility, a monument shuttle runs at the Kyffhäuser Monument from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 17:00, connecting the parking areas with the ticket office. During the Thuringian school holidays, the shuttle also runs on weekdays. Check the published times before making specific plans.
